Maine coon cats are found in abundance in Maine, North America and are different than the normal domestic cats in their physical appearance, behavioral patterns as well as eating habits. This article will deal mainly with the Maine Coon Cats and their main features.

One of the largest breeds of the domestic cat, the Main Coon has its own distinctive physical appearance. The cat which is one of the oldest natural breeds of North America is known by different names like the Maine Coon, coon cat, Maine cat or simply the gentle giant.

The Maine Coon originated in Maine where it is now labeled as the official State Cat. When domestic cats were brought over to Maine in the 17th and 18th centuries, only the strongest ones survived the cold winters. Consequently, Maine cats developed a large and rugged look. Their fur turned into a water-resistant, thick, long-hair coat which is different from the other natural long-hair breeds.

The average weight of Maine coons range from 6-9 kilograms (for males). Most often, they grow longer than 1 meter. They are mostly brown in colour. The eye-colour varies from green to gold to blue. Almost all Maine cats have a distinct "M" shape mark on their forehead. Consisting of two-layers, the fur of Maine cats is longer on the chests, between their toes and the backs of their legs. They have a bushy tail. Maine cats have angular faces with large ears. They are polydactyl (having one or more extra toes on their paws) which accounts for their high intelligence.

Maine cats extensively use their front paws by which they are able to perform a host of daily chores like opening cabinet doors, flushing toilets or even picking up small objects. Some of the cats may also eat and drink from their paws it. They are very easy to train and love the company of others. They resemble dogs in their behavioral patterns and are patient listeners of their masters. Maine cats are generally healthy, energetic and hardy. Addition of fish oils in their diet helps to keep their fur in good condition. Proper maintenance and care will serve better results.

Speculations abound about the origin of the Maine cat. According to popular folklore, the cat is a descendent of a cross between a coon and a common cat. Another story is that the cat was brought into Maine by a ship's cabin boy, Tom Coon. Some say that the cat originated from Maria Antoinette's pet cats which she had sent to Wiscasset during the French Revolution. The most logical explanation of the cat's origin is held by breeders who believe that the cat might have sprung out from mating between domestic cats and overseas long-haired cats.

Whatever it is, Maine Coon Cats can serve as a great pet like any other pet in home.
