Depending on where you live in the United Kingdom, there are various species of birds that can be seen flying over your house or meandering about in your very own back yard. Bird lovers and even little children will have the curiosity in attracting these birds by dropping off food where you think they might spot it or even have special feeders or bird tables placed in an outdoor location to offer bird feed. Depending on the season and area of where you live in, you can spot various types of birds like the Blue Tit, Great Tit, Chaffinch, Collard Dove, House Sparrow, Goldfinch, Wood Pigeon, Starling, Robin, the Blackbird and many more. The Greenfinch, Jackdaw, Magpie and Wren can also be added to the list.
Natural bird food includes seeds such as niger seed, black sunflower seed, hempseed, linseed, barley, groats etc. Niger which is also known as thistle seed is a favourite among the finches family, specially the Goldfinch and the Greenfinch. The variety of bird seeds and mixtures that you find in the market is overwhelming yet you can decide after a matter of time which seeds attract which species of birds that flock around.
Another natural food form for wild birds is dried mealworms which is the larval form of the darkling beetle. Mealworms are also used as a food source for fish and reptiles as well. These are also high in protein while it’s very useful during the nesting season for a steady food supply for the young ones.
You can also use suet which is technically the hard fat around the kidneys and loins in beef and mutton. But most kinds of beef fat can safely be fed to birds. These types of animal fat is easily digested and metabolized by most of the birds and also it includes high-energy levels which aid these birds in the cold English weather. Suet fat blocks are also mixed with other ingredients such as cereals, porridge oats, natural berries, fruits etc.
Other forms of bird feed include peanuts, fruits, fruit seeds, leftovers, nectar, water as well grit and minerals.
