The Chinese government is taking note of this and has made ambitious plans to increase and encourage tourism to this part of China over the next ten years. Luxurious, upscale hotels and resorts are in plans for development in popular cities such as Lhasa, and the region’s infrastructure is set to improve drastically to accommodate tourists.

However, there are a few steps one needs to take before joining a tour to Tibet. The Chinese government has established certain restrictions and permits necessary prior to entering this region of western China.

* You will first need to consult the Chinese government for permission to enter Tibet. Many Chinese tourism agencies offer Tibet Tourism Bureau permits as part of their packages.

* If you plan on arriving from Nepal, request a Tibet travel permit from the Chinese embassy in Katmandu.

* It’s best to arrange a tour through a Chinese tourism agency. For increased convenience, many tour companies provide 5 day tours from Beijing to Tibet. You may find other packages that allow you to depart from Shanghai as well.

* If you decide to travel by land, it is recommended that you enter Tibet via its specified bus routes. It is possible to hike or backpack into the region, but is highly recommended against. The border not the safest place for a foreigner and is especially difficult to navigate.

Entering Tibet can be a sensitive issue among the Chinese government, and should be preceded with respect for the guidelines and customs. Also, it is recommended that before touring Tibet, visitors familiarize themselves with the culture and traditions of the Tibetan people to avoid seeming disrespectful of the city’s customs.
