Because of the consistent demand for professional truck drivers nowadays, truck driving schools in Houston have also been enjoying a steady enrollment rate. And as time goes by more CDL training schools have been cropping up, if not in Houston then in neighboring towns as well. Now, if you’re an aspiring truck driver, how do you choose which school to enroll in? Do you even need to enroll in a training center, or should one just study truck driving on your own? Below we’ll be listing several things that you should be considering before entering any truck driving school of your choice.

For almost all people, their budget is always a primary consideration in choosing a school. Private schools usually charge anywhere between 3000$- 5000$ for a three-week long CDL Course, while public schools usually charge only a fraction of that. If you have a company-sponsored training center in your area, then you could even possibly train for free- that is, if you pass their tests. However we don’t have one in Houston, so the only options we have are the private and public institutions. If your only consideration is saving money, then you could go with the public CDL training schools. However, private institutions offer more simulation and hands-on time, while public schools tend to be more academic- centered.

Another thing that you should be looking for in your prospective truck driving school in Houston is a good track record. Your chosen school should have a healthy licensure passing rate, and a good record with trucking companies for you to have a better chance of getting hired. When I say a “good record”, I mean that your school has provided the company with competent and dependable drivers in the past. Reputable CDL schools would only be too glad to boast about their good employment rates- some advertise it in their websites, while others readily answer questions about their passing and employment rates when asked.

A moderate teacher to student ratio is also advisable. The classroom and hands-on ratio must vary, though- during simulation, observation and hands-on times, its best to have one instructor for every four students, as having too many students would mean that the instructor would hardly have any time to correct any one student should he commit mistakes during practice. It’s alright to have around twenty to thirty students during classroom instruction though, as this would mean that a school has a healthy number of enrollees, translating to a good training reputation. You could visit the school during class or instruction hours to check on their numbers if you just want to make sure that you’re choosing the right school.

Lastly, one should also consider the working experience of the instructors in your potential truck driving schools in Houston. As with any subject, it’s always best if the teacher knows what he’s talking about. Walk the talk, as the saying goes. Same in truck driving, only this time it’s more critical because an unknowledgeable instructor might teach students techniques that are not only be outdated, but might also cause untoward situations. Another plus of having an experienced instructor is that he (or she, in some cases) could also give you an idea as to how life on the road really is.
