The Germans are closing in fast and it is time for the Japanese to get their act together. Did you think we were talking about some political conflict? No, we are not. We are talking about Volkswagen Group’s upcoming sedan Volkswagen Vento that is going to be placed in competition with Honda City. “Volkswagen Vento is targeted at the City segment as there is least competition there. The drive, handling, interiors and exteriors of the Volkswagen Vento have been developed keeping in mind the City,” a source informed an auto magazine.
Volkswagen Vento would share its platform with the recently launched hatchback Polo that was launched by VW in February. The Volkswagen Vento would be positioned as a premium car, as one can expect from Volkswagen. According to a company official Vento will be competitive in terms of value proposition and impact segment with the sedan. We are a premium brand with premium products and do not intend to be in the price-sensitive segment.
One major battle winning factor for both the carmakers would be the pricing. No official announcement has been made regarding the Volkswagen Vento’s price. As far as speculations and industry observers go the Volkswagen Vento is expected to be priced at Rs 9-10 lakh. This would be almost near Honda City’s Rs 8.59 – Rs 11.04 lakh.
However, The Volkswagen Vento is expected to have several unique features that will give it and edge over Honda City. The first being the introduction of a diesel engine that is not present in the Honda City. The Volkswagen Vento would be available in both diesel and petrol models. The Volkswagen Vento would have the Polo’s 1.6-litre petrol engine. The engine would most probably be imported.
Presently it is Honda City ruling the luxury sedan segment in India cloaking the highest sales. The Sedan has been extremely popular since the day it was launched and offers great features to the buyers. Volkswagen seems to be investing intelligently as this happens to be the untapped segment and would offer great sources of revenue and customer base.
Volkswagen Vento is being expected in the second half of this year and is aimed at dethroning Honda City and going past its sales record of 4,000 units monthly. The Volkswagen Vento would be produced at the VW’s new factory at Chakan, near Pune. This plant currently makes the Polo and Skoda’s Fabia.
