Volkswagen is continuing the recent trend for unusual car names by naming its newest small car the up! Much smaller than either the VW Golf or Polo, the up! is a small car with charisma according to Volkswagen and replaces the Volkswagen Fox. Measuring just 3.5 metres, Volkswagen claim there will be room for four adults and a 251 litre boot.
Three versions of the up! will be available to cater for different budget and needs, all continuing the unusual name theme: the take up! is the entry level model; move up! is the comfort oriented one and high up! is the top version of the car. Two special edition models will also be available, the up! black and the up! white.
The up! will be launched to the European market in December 2011 and will be powered by either a 59bhp or 74bhp three-cylinder petrol engine. Designed to be fuel-efficient and with economy in mind, the up! should have enough performance for city driving. It will also be a wise choice for motorists looking to cut costs on VW servicing. Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey VW dealers as well as those throughout London will be excited about the new model, as London city drivers will be one of the main target markets for VW.
For those wanting to escape the London Congestion Charge and road tax, a BlueMotion technology version with stop and start will be available, which will have an average fuel economy of 67.3mpg ad CO2 emissions below 100g/km. A zero-emission electric version will be available in the future.
The interior aims to be more youthful than other Volkswagen models, with a body-coloured strip across the dashboard, and a new portable mobile-phone sized device comprising navigation, telephone, information and entertainment will be available. The intuitive infotainment unit, called “maps + more” will connect to the car’s speakers, and will also display rear parking distances in models equipped with rear parking sensors. Also on offer will be the option of Volkswagen’s City Emergency Braking System which can detect the distance of cars in front when travelling under 18mph, and will automatically apply the brakes when needed.
