A lot of our focus when we travel is centered on how we can make our sightseeing tours or vacation that much more fun and enjoyable. Sometimes our thoughts can be centered on whether or not we’d like to tour San Francisco for our vacation or if perhaps a Niagara Falls tour would be more to our liking. But the one thing a lot of us neglect is our friends. And by friends in this case, we’re not referring to someone you might bring along as a Travel Companion. No, in this case, we’re referring to the friends that might not be able to go on your bus trip with you – your pet. While not all pets are suited for travel (your lizard might not really want to tour America after all), others might just enjoy a family outing.

Here are some tips to remember the next time you plan a vacation that can include the family pet:

Keep your pets safe and secure with a proper kennel carrier. Make sure it’s well-ventilated and has more than enough room for them to stand up, sit down and turn around in to help keep them comfortable for the times that your pet will have to be kept in its kennel during your vacation. Make sure to give your pet time to become accustomed to this surrounding before going on your trip to let them become familiar with this before the vacation.

Locate and secure proper identification (including recent photographs) and records for your pet – particularly if you’re travelling across the border where they may check for a current rabies vaccination. Also, become familiar with the laws and guidelines of the country you’re visiting when it comes to transporting your pet across their borders if you’re going to tour Europe or some other international locale.

Bring a large supply of food and water for your pet for the times when it’s not readily-available. Some pets have sensitive stomachs that might not be prepared for a change in diet on the trip. Also, pack waterproof containers to carry them in along with dishes that can be used when on the road to feed and hydrate your pet.

Consider a first aid kit with medications specifically tailored to your pet’s needs. Make sure you have an ample supply on hand and that each medication is labeled clearly.

If possible, familiarize yourself with pet hospital options along your route and your travel destination in case of an emergency.

If you decide to take your pet along on your next vacation, make sure to follow some simple guidelines to ensure that you and your pet have the best vacation possible.
