The engine oil is crucial for the smooth performance of the vehicle as it lubricates the power plant of the vehicle. No less in importance is the transmission fluid that coats gears and torque converters.

Bulk of the vehicles including private cars today has automatic transmissions and hence uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Technically speaking, the pressure changes that take place within the ATF cause the transmission to switch gears.
Fluid temperatures rise to 175 degrees Fahrenheit (79 degrees Celsius) - which though seemingly alarming - is perfectly normal for ATF. But the critical aspect is the fluid temperatures constantly fluctuates due to a variety of factors like - stop-and-go driving, carrying heavy load, driving long distances or climbing mountains. It is for this reason that vehicle manufacturers recommend change of ATF and filter every 20,000 to 25,000 miles.
It is preferable that you entrust the work of changing transmission fluid to quailed mechanics – even if it means spending some money. This is not to say you it is impossible for you to do this on your own. But for effective transmission fluid and oil change, you will need some basic knowledge and also be in possession of some simple tools.
Houston automatic transmissions use something called automatic transmission fluid. Manual transmissions, on the other hand, use a variety of oils including regular motor oil, heavyweight hypoid gear oil or even automatic transmission fluid in select cases. Your vehicle manufacturer will tell you what your transmission actually calls for.
With a Texas manual transmission, the fluid does not usually degrade but instead fluid contamination takes place. As a result, metal particles begin to float around in the lubricant. So, these contaminants have to be drained out – as otherwise, they will shorten the life of your transmission.
Automatic transmission fluid, on the other hand, degrades and becomes fragmental with use - because more heat is generated in an automatic transmission. Besides, automatic transmission fluid will also get contaminated with worn bits of the transmission and needs to be drained out.
Unlike engine oil, transmission oil does not burn up. So if there is a reduction of transmission fluid, there is obviously some leak. For most cars, checking the automatic transmission fluid consists of pulling the transmission dipstick out while the engine is warmed up and running and with the transmission in park. It is however safer to check your owner's manual as some manufacturers may suggest a different procedure.
It's no doubt important to check the transmission fluid level at regular intervals. Letting your car run low on transmission fluid can cause the transmission to shift improperly — or not at all. It also can damage the internal parts of your transmission.
When transmission oil is changed the filter also has to be changed particularly it is a filter made of paper. Mesh filter is capable of being reused. When the transmission fluid is being changed, you will have to invariably check the seals of the pan. If there is leakage you may have to replace it.
But the relieving fact is a lot of research has taken place and as a result, the changing of transmission oil has become more infrequent. Manufacturers of some new models cars recommend oil change only after every 100,000 miles. Interestingly, there are also some manufacturers who claim their cars need no transmission oil changes at all.
