The Protestants criticise the Mormons because they baptize for the dead. They rightly say that they use one Scripture to justify it, which is taken out of context. "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" (1 Corinthians 15:29) However, they turn around and baptise others using only one Scripture while ignoring the rest of the them, as well as history.
The Protestants criticise the Mormons because they baptize for the dead. They rightly say that they use one Scripture to justify it, which is taken out of context. "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" (1 Corinthians 15:29) What the whole chapter's message is death and then the resurrection. Paul's point was simple, that one must die to self and arise in Christ, and that the resurrection is a reality. That we are baptized into Christ's death and arise (spiritually) in the likeness of His resurrection. Let's line up some of Paul's other writings to complete the thought that he was giving there. We must remember that The Apostle Paul was baptized himself into the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (see Acts 22:16; 10:36). And he also baptized some of the Corinthians into the name of Jesus Christ (most churches do lie and say that he did not ever baptize, when he plainly said that he was not called just to baptize but to preach, and so he obviously baptized others). Please read Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 1:1-24 for the real facts. Anyhow, here's the evidence the one must be buried (immersed in Christ) to arise with Him. "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." (Romans 6:3-6)

Nowhere within the word of God did anyone baptize another in the place (proxy) of another person. This is called baptism for the dead by the Mormons. The prophet Ezekiel said that only righteous people would be able to save themselves on the day of judgment (Ezekiel 14:20). Peter himself said save yourselves from this untoward (ungodly) generation. He then baptized 3,000 Jewish believers in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of their sins. The whole story can be read in Acts 2:1-45. This is where the church started, and not in the book of Romans. The letter (epistles) were written to believers who had already been baptized into the one baptism (Ephesians 4:5) that now saves us because of faith in action (James 2:15-26), the one of Jesus' name. So while I agree that the Mormons are taking one Scripture out of context, and twisting it to mean something else (2 Peter 3:16). But so are the Protestants. They take Matthew 28:19 out of context to import a pagan Godhead and Gnostic baptism. In essence, they doing the same thing that they accuse the Mormons of doing. They also are using only one Scripture wrongly to adopt a dogma or doctrine. And this is a very dangerous thing to do (Isaiah 28:9-13).

"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." (Matthew 28:18-20) Here we first see that Jesus hold all power everywhere. If there is a separate father or Holy Ghost then they are powerless. Secondly, Jesus said baptize in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy Ghost; and not names father, son and Holy Ghost. Go sign a check in the names of the father, son and spirit and see what happens. Nobody would ever accept that. I am a father, and have a son along with the Holy Spirit inside me; but that's not my name. That's a description of me. On the other hand, even today there people named Jesus (pronounced Hay-Zeus in Spanish). Jesus said that He came in his father's name (Matthew 5:43). The name of the Son of God was Jesus (Matthew 1:21). And the Holy Ghost or Spirit was sent in Jesus' name (John 14:26). The name of Jesus is the whole family name (Ephesians 3:14-15). Nowhere did anybody baptize another person into anything except into Jesus, the Lord Jesus or the Lord Jesus Christ in the Scriptures. Read the account for yourselves in the book of Acts 2:38; 8:12-40; 10:48; 16:15; 31-33; 18:8: 19:5; 22:16; 1 Corinthians 1:1-24; Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:36-38; Colossians 2:10-12; etc).

We read that in the Mark 16:15-17 that Jesus told him to baptize believers who heard the Gospel in His name. Also. Luke wrote that Jesus said do it in His name (Luke 24:45-47). John wrote that one must be Born Again by the water (baptism) and (Holy) Spirit to be saved (John 3:5). We also read in John 20:20-31 that Jesus sent His disciples out to forgive sin in His name. The fact remains that all the Apostles baptized correctly into the only saving and commanded name (John 14:6; Acts 4:10-12; Colossians 3:17). So either the Apostles disobeyed Jesus (and they did not) or your churches are disobeying Christ now. There's only one Gospel message (Galatians 1:6-10).

Why did the all of the Apostles cast out demons in Jesus' name (Acts 16:18)? Why did they heal sick in His name (Acts 3:6)? Why did they do many miracles in that name that's above every other name (Acts 19:11-12; Philippians 2:8-10)? Why? I will tell you why! Jesus' name meant everything to them (James 2:1-7). One day many will say to the Lord Jesus that they did the same things (Matthew 7:21-23). But He will say that He never knew them (in the same sense that a man knows his wife intimately). It's because they refused the Cornerstone called Jesus Christ, upon whom the whole church is built upon in their baptism (Mark 12:10; Ephesians 2:20). That's why. So these are no different than the Mormons. They use only one Scripture to justify a false doctrine of devils, and disobedience to the Lord. Jesus is Lord of all things my friend (Zechariah 14:9; Acts 10:36). Let Him be your Lord by accepting baptism in His name. It alone saves. Do not be caught dead without His name applied to every part of your walk with Him. God bless you!
