Yellowstone is the best national park for getting acquainted with the great outdoors at any age. Children will never experience a dull moment while touring Yellowstone. This family-friendly park has lots of wildlife, geysers, mud pots, lakes for fishing and a variety of other natural wonders that will astound the senses. Parts of Yellowstone will even feel like walking on a different planet. Leave the electronic gadgets at home, because at Yellowstone kids will be entertained for days. To help guarantee your kids have a unique and memorable trip, the following is a list of activities for kids in Yellowstone:
Make a wildlife check list for the kids. Children can stay on the look out for elk, buffalo, deer, chipmunks and other woodland creatures. The first to spot the most animals on the list wins!
Educate your children about the park’s local wildlife. Join your child on one of the Ranger-led nature talks, walks or hikes that cover park history, animal behavior and land formations.
Help your child earn a Junior Ranger’s badge by fulfilling a few tasks. By the end of the trip you can watch your child be sworn in as an official Junior Ranger.
Make your way over to the 45th Parallel Bridge where you and the kids can stand halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Don’t forget to take a picture!
Swim the Firehole. Take the kids for a little water recreation in the Firehole River or the Boiling River swim areas. The water is cool and welcoming on a hot summer day. Kids can watch as scuba divers practice in the Firehole area. Just remember to be mindful of the currents.
Do some geyser gazing. Walk around the Geyser Hill trail to observe mud pots and steam vents before taking a seat to watch Old Faithful erupt.
Want to see a grizzly? The idea seems dangerous, but at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center the rescued grizzly bears and grey wolves can be viewed from a safe distance.
Go horseback riding. Reserve a horseback riding adventure for the early morning to get close-up views of elk, bison and moose.
Journey with the kids to the Grand Teton National Park, just a few miles from Yellowstone, and take a lazy float trip on the Snake River.
Get a taste of the Wild West. Watch as cowboys lasso-up, bull-ride, steer wrestle and barrel race. Most rodeo shows in the greater Yellowstone Park region are held during the summer, so plan accordingly.
