People all across the globe have been converging on the beautiful city of China because of the World Expo that has been ongoing. The World Expo, where countries from all over the globe will be gathering to share ideas, culture and so forth, has been a main attraction for the city which has long amazed visitors with its revolutionary architecture and fun-going lifestyle. If you’re taking a tour of Shanghai, you’ll probably have your itinerary already planned. However, if you have some extra time to enjoy the city, here are some of the top things to do on your own when taking a tour of Shanghai:

• French Concession – Even though you’re in the middle of a city with a population of well over 17 million people, taking a walk through the French Concession makes you feel like you’re in a quaint little neighborhood. This little area of Shanghai is filled with trees that were imported from France in the early 1900s that line both sides of the street in every area. Old villas and lane houses are slowly being renovated into shops and homes that make this area a great place to visit in Shanghai.

• The Bund – The Bund is Shanghai’s most famous landmark and plays home to many fancy dinners that are held in the city. Walk through the renovated Art-Deco Peace Hotel, visit The HSBC Building’s fully-restored lobby, enjoy a drink at the M on the Bund or stroll along the far side of the promenade next to the Huang Pu River.

• The Jin Mao Tower – The second-tallest building in Shanghai at 88 stories, the building’s remarkable architecture is recognizable on a clear day from all over the city. Access the building’s 88th floor observation deck for about $6 and enjoy spectacular views of the neighboring skyscrapers and the entire city of Shanghai.

• The Taikang Road Art, Café & Shopping District – Enjoy some shopping by heading over to Taikang Road. Walk down the roads and check out local Shanghai life at its best with street vendors selling pancakes and fruit, kids running around playing, and women hanging up their family’s laundry to dry in the fresh air. Head on over to alley 210 and wander down the lane to find shops selling all kinds of souvenirs such as traditional Chinese garb and jewelry.

• Yongfoo Elite – Enjoy this building that allegedly once housed the British Consulate. Fantastic gardens can be found here thanks to a two-year refurbishing job that the current resident has undertaken. Take advantage of the terrace or garden seating by taking your tea and cake outside to enjoy along with the fountains and swing chairs that complete the feel of tranquility.

Whether you take a tour of Shanghai to enjoy the World Expo or if you’re going for yourself or even a business trip, there are several can’t-miss spots in Shanghai. Make sure you get to enjoy all of them when taking a Shanghai vacation in order to get the most out of your trip.
