It doesn’t matter whether you plan to travel the Yellowstone National Park in a tour group or trek through the park on your own, because touring Yellowstone falls under the “ absolutely must-do” category. There is so much to do in the park visitors will find themselves overwhelmed. You never have to look very far for adventure. Try canoeing, hiking historic trails or touring old ghost towns. At Yellowstone National Park there is something for everyone. For travelers planning to make the popular Yellowstone trip this summer, here are a few suggestions on things to do on your Yellowstone vacation:
1.) See the amazing wildlife.
Yellowstone is home to several species of animals. You will come across bison, elk, grey wolves, bears and elegant swans. The animals are beautiful, but wild and unpredictable. Remember to keep your distance while hiking.
2.) Visit Mammoth Hot Springs.
Enjoy the mysterious quality of the colorful boiling springs and hissing steam vents. Admire the other-worldly effect lime deposits have on the Mammoth terraces. If you feel like taking a dip make your way to the designated swim area at Boiling River, located just a few miles north of Mammoth.
3.) Explore the Upper Geyser Basin.
While waiting for Old Faithful to blast boiling water high up into the air, take a hike on any of the easy trails around the area, or, rent a bike and take a leisurely ride on one of the paved trails. Spot the steam vents, mud pots and strangely beautiful colors created by the geothermal activity. There are over 150 geysers in the area; you could easily spend a day here.
4.) Hit the scenic trails by horseback.
Ride in the early morning to catch a glimpse of the park’s furry inhabitants. There’s nothing like riding horseback through Yellowstone; you’ll feel just like a real cowboy.
5.) Go whitewater rafting.
Feel the rush as you navigate through the cold rapids of the Yellowstone River.
6.) Journey to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
Be swept away by the breathtaking views of the canyon which spans 4,000 feet wide and in some places 1,200 feet deep. Here you can admire the ferocious beauty of the Lower Falls and the Upper Falls. Sit in peace and admire the tranquility of nature. See bison, elk, deer and possibly a bear or two wandering in their natural habitat-this is one of the many special highlights Yellowstone has to offer.
7.) Explore the Mud Volcano Region.
The small but active area is located north of Yellowstone Lake. Here you will find a collection of mud pots and a foul rotten-egg smell lingering in the air.
8.) Discover the magic of Lamar Valley
Wide open spaces and a flowing river make Lamar Valley the perfect place to see wildlife. Spring brings new life to this part of the park. Get an early start and watch the sun rise as antelope and their fawns sprawl across the valley.
The above suggestions were geared towards things that adults can indulge into while touring Yellowstone. Yellowstone offers an ample scope to plan outdoor adventures with kids. Check our “Kid Friendly Things To Do” to plan enjoyable outdoor outings with kids at Yellowstone!
