A lot has been discussed about the prices and features of the recently launched hatchbacks in the market. Each new car launched brings with itself a slew of never-before features and tries to lure the buyer. Be it the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with its all new K-series engine and a new platform or the Ford Figo with its big car like feel and mouth-watering price tag.

Each new car launched brings with itself a slew of never-before features and tries to lure the buyer. Be it the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with its all new K-series engine and a new platform or the Ford Figo with its big car like feel and mouth-watering price tag. All the latest hatchbacks are boasting of ‘unique’ features ‘uncommon to the segment’. However, there is one particular ‘quality’ that most hatchback buyers never fail to check in the car – the kmpl (Kilometre per litre) factor or the mileage that the car is offering. So, let us go and inspect how some of the recently launched hatchbacks fare on that front.
Ford Figo The 1.2 Petrol Duratec engine with 1196 cc of displacement is capable of producing 71 bhp at 6250 rpm and a maximum torque of 102Nm at 4000 rpm. While the 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine offers 68 bhp with 160nm of torque at 2000 RPM. The petrol version offers a mileage of about 12.5kmpl in the city and 15.5kmpl on the highway and the diesel version offers about 14.5kmpl in the city and 18.5kmpl on the highway.
Volkswagen Polo The three-cylinder 1.2L (1198 cc) petrol Polo offers 74 BHP (5,400 rpms) and 110 NM of torque (3,750 rpms). The 1.2L 3-cylinder diesel engine offers 74 BHP (4,200 rpms) and 180 NM of torque (2,000 rpms). The Volkswagen Polo petrol offers a mileage of about 12kmpl in the city and 16kmpl on the highway while the diesel version offers about 13.5kmpl in the city and 17.5kmpl on the highway.
Chevrolet Beat The car has a 1.2L 4 cylinder petrol engine. This 1199cc 16v DOHC engine offers 79 BHP at 6,200 rpm and 108 NM torque at 4,400 rpm. The car offers a mileage of about 14.6kmpl in the city and 18.6kmpl on the highway.
Maruti Wagon R The all new K10B engine in the Maruti Wagon Rhas the capacity of generating 68PS of power and 90Nm of torque. The new K-series engine is being applauded in the Ritz and Swift and is expected to perform very well in the new generation Wagon R. The new Wagon R offers about 14.2kmpl in the city and 18.9kmpl on the highway.
With the cost sensitie nature of Indian buyers this wouold always remain the buzz word in the automobile industry and the ket consideration of car makers while targetting the Indian automotive market.
