The Roman Report

The Roman Diognetes received the following report from an outpost in the (Roman) empire in A.D. 150. "The Christians are distinguished from other men neither by country nor by language nor the customs which they observe. For they neither inhabit cities of their own nor employ a peculiar form of speech nor lead a life which is marked out by singularity. They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners." Does this sound familiar? Would anyone accuse you of being a Christian? I hope so.
They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners. As citizens, they share in all things with others and yet endure all things as if foreigners. Every foreign land is to them as their native country, and the land of their birth as a land of strangers. They are in the flesh but do not live after the flesh. They pass their time here on earth but are citizens of heaven. They obey the prescribed laws of the land and at the same time surpass the laws by their lives. They love all men and are persecuted by all. They are poor but make many rich. To sum up in a word: What the soul is in the body, that is a Christian in the world."

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country." (Hebrews 11:1-2; 13-14)

Does this report sound like one that somebody would ever say about you, your family or your church? Would someone or anyone ever accuse you of being a Christian? Or are you a secret under cover agent for Christ? Jesus has called us to be His light, salt, royal priesthood, and peculiar people among other things. Are you the one standing up for His word? Do you seek the lost, and give unto others who have nothing to give back? Is prayer, bible reading and fellowship with Christ a daily thing in your life? Let's all hope and pray that those around us see the light of Christ in us, or recognise it by our deeds done in His name. May God give us grace and truth in all things.
