We have the writings of Clement, the fourth bishop who probably saw the Apostle Paul in person. He had no trinity in his writings. Polycarp quoted from his 1st Clement. Polycarp, who was another Oneness believer and associated with the apostle Paul, had fellowship with the sixth and tenth Roman bishops. The tenth bishop, Pius, was the half brother of the famous Hermas, who wrote The Shepherd, a monarchian piece of literature that advocated baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was popularly read by many alongside the word of God, and was widely popular until around the fourth century. It's also known that Soter, Eleutherus and Victor stood against the Montanists and the second century Grecian invented Logos doctrine. Victor was in fellowship with Praxeus. who was another known Oneness adherent. Zephyrinus and Callistus were modalistic monarchians. We have the writings of Callistus (quoted by his enemies) that prove this point. The first fourteen Catholic Church bishops were Oneness believers without any doubts whatsoever. In fact, they all baptized into the name of Jesus Christ as well (because of the Oneness doctrine). The practiced continued probably up until the time of Stephen, bishop of Rome and Cyprian, bishop of Carthage (258 AD). Soter, and his successor Eleutherus opposed the Montanists (even though the latter was visited by a group led by Irenaeus from modern France, who urged Eleutherus to accept them as brothers. He refused to. All this information was taken from W.A. Chaflant's book of "Ancient Champions of Oneness."
Adolf Harnack also thought that Eleutherus, Victor, Zephyrinus and Callistus were all Oneness believers. Without a doubt Praxeus visited a Oneness Roman Church, and it was the orthodox or the most widely accepted belief system of the time. Tertullian who railed against Praxeus in his letters, concurs with this assessment and fact. He wrote that "the majority of the faithful," whom he termed as "simple people," were Oneness adherents. Tertullian also accused Praxeus of holding to a Jewish faith. Obviously, he was playing upon the anti-Semitic feelings of some of his Gentile readers. Maybe he forgot that Jesus and all the Apostles were all Jews! One should note that Tertullian, who was a Montanist (and later left them as he did the Catholics, to start his own church). emphasized the spirit, as being in the third place; behind the father and son. He was the first person to create the idea of a trinity, based on Plato's work of "Timaeus." As he also wrote, "The son I derive from no other source but from the substance of the father. The (Holy) spirit is third from God and the son." Interestingly, in his statement Tertullian saddled the son with derivation and subordination concerning the son and the Holy Ghost. He also apparently upheld the procession (although he did not use that exact language, but simply implied it in his writings) of the holy Spirit from both the father (God), and the son (of God). This was issue was later contested (after the trinity was adopted as doctrine in 325 AD) by the Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches, as to whether the spirit proceeded from the father alone (the Eastern Orthodox position) or from both the father and then the son (the Roman position).
There are some that think that I am against the Roman Catholic Church. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am a Roman Adherent, if your referring to the obedience of the book of Romans, as written by the Apostle Paul. I am also a Protestant, due to the fact that I protest Rome's departure from her original teachings. I am a Pentecostal, because I believe that on the day of Pentecost that the gifts of the God and the functions of His Holy Spirit, were freely delivered unto all to endure until His Second Return to the earth. They believe in One God, and baptism in His name of Jesus - even as do I. However, Jesus never spoke in tongues and He never changes. So we are not required by Him to do that (and other people such as King David, John the Baptist, and the Jailer, and so on who all had the Holy Spirit without ever talking in tongues) to become a Christian. We are to covet the best gifts of the Holy Spirit without requiring them for a sign (tongues are a sign for unbelievers and not one of salvation) of being saved. (However, we all should bring forth spiritual fruits such love, joy and peace while walking with the Lord.) After all, it is through His grace that's reflected in our lives, and by our active faith and not of our own personal works, that we are saved.
Paul was all things to all men, that he might win some of them to Christ. One thing must be clear, I will not change the Gospel message nor compromise (it) with the world in order to present it. The fact remains that until the 144,000 virgin Jewish Christians (from every qualified tribe of Israel) preaches this same gospel message to the entire world, the end will not come. They will convert perhaps one-third of mankind to this truth. Then the extermination of Christians will begin in earnest by the Antichrist's forces, who will reject the word of God. And then the end will finally come, after the final judgments of God (for destruction, and not instruction) upon an unrepentant and ungodly world. All of this can be clearly seen in the Scriptures by anyone who is willing to search out the truth. May God deliver all of His saints from unnecessary troubles, by placing the wicked and the rebellious in their place, and grant deliverance to all who righteously call upon His name of Jesus in verity.
