The meaning of mantra is a powerful word. It is known to have great effects when chanted. The chants are sang in repetition and called japa.
Mantras are rich in meaning. While in the state of japa, a person can meditate on its meaning or mantra. As the mind meditates, the mantra puts the mind in a state of eternal bliss.
Compared to ordinary words, mantras are special. Any human does not compose them. Sages do not compose mantras. They discover them. Through a deep trance and meditation, they form a better connection with God.
To become one of these discoverers, a great deal of learning and training of the mind is required. Not all qualify. Only a few can channel their minds and passively hear these mantras.
Mantras been preserved in their pure form by the use of an assortment of techniques. These techniques are gana patas, ja ta, karma, and patha. These techniques ensure the chanter hears the correct sound that corresponds to each svara (letter). The chanter is required to chant the mantra only after hearing the proper pronunciation. This is done to preserve the mantra throughout time.
There are gurus who initiate their disciples in mantras. These gurus ensure that their disciple get the mantras right. This is done for independent chanting and the initiation of others in the same mantra by all generations and the next generation to come. In other words, all Vedas preserved through word of mouth and only in the recent past the Vedas written down in text.
It is an amazing accomplishment to have passed the Vedas from generation to generation for centuries my merely reciting mantras. Although texts are now available for reading, it is important for someone to learn the proper way to chant these mantras. This way, the proper way of practicing the religion and its beliefs are not lost in time.
Merely reading the text will not accomplish a state of higher meditation. Chanting is known to bestow great powers, which is why it still in practice today.
Although there are numerous known mantras, there are only a few that are held in high esteem by holy shaivas (devotees of Shiva). Only a few have attained a greater path of liberation (mukti). Only these few can lead chanters to this path. A few of them are the Gayatri, Panjchakshara, and Pranaya. For the shaivas, the Panjchakshara (holy five syllables) combined with the Pranava is considered the ultimate mantra.
