The SUV segment in India was almost of a purist opinion. A suv had to be a suv and nothing beyond that. Once in a while there were some changes like the Audi with the Quattro technology and the innovations just about ended there.
The SUV segment in India was almost of a purist opinion. A suv had to be a suv and nothing beyond that. Once in a while there were some changes like the Audi with the Quattro technology and the innovations just about ended there. The introduction of the Tata Aria in this regard is surely commendable that too with a 4X4 drive option. Around the world the 4X4 drives are a common sight to everything from hatchbacks to sedans, estates, utility vehicles and of course the SUVs.

The Aria is a lot of things and to start off it is an MUV. On the front to the back, the car looks like an all in one box but hardly resembles a van. The front end has a unique shape at the back of the grille which bends at the windscreen and it is this structure that makes it resemble a MUV. Typically most SUVs are clean flat with a solid vertical platform on the hood and this is evident from the Skoda Yeti which is possibly the closest that resembles the Aria. The Aria is also quite stronger and bigger in size dimensions when compared to the Skoda Yeti. The Aria is also not your typical Tata product and is quite unlike anything the company has released so far.

The car has been made well from paper to production. The colors and flowing lines give the car a well toned look. The Yeti is an SUV and that makes it suited not only to muck and sticky patches but also up and down steep inclines. For the descent and ascent journey the car not only needs uphill or downhill mobility but most importantly also have a good clearance. The short wheelbase of 2578mm makes the Yeti an all terrain performer. The Aria is brought back to the earth with a longer wheelbase of 2850 mm which reduces maneuverability in tight spots, though with 20mm more ground clearance and nearly as good approach and departure angles as the Yeti it is quite an accomplished off-roader.

The Aria is also a huge surprise and trend setter. The exterior design has a complete influence on the interior look and feel of the car. They are poles apart like the New Zealand apple and the Himachal kind. The Yeti is a straight forward car with five seats and is short of space for the third row seats but make up with maximum luggage space. The overall capacity easily seats up to seven people however the foldable third row seats are not comfortable enough for the passengers in the long run. The last row seats also become a hindrance if they are not folded up and gobble up the boot space. The pack seats are away and there is far more space available than the Yeti in the Aria.

The Aria has a huge 2.2-litre DICOR compared to the smaller 2.0-litre common-rail direct injection mill of the Yeti. The turbocharged engines deliver 140PS and 320Nm of max torque. The Aria peaks at a higher 4200rpm while the Yeti reaches the climax at 4000rpm. This gives the Aria a slight edge in the drivability and the initial pick-up.
