Water treatment is not a process that is just restricted to government business but it is one of those processes that affect the health of a country’s population directly. The process of treating water includes its purification through different processes, techniques, technologies, minerals and chemicals. As the end result, the process is to purify the water to the extent where it is not only free from harmful and polluting bacteria but is also absolutely safe to drink. When this stage is attained, the water from large water treatment plants and factories is sent to various water pipes that lead to different commercial and residential premises.

Water is not only required for drinking or household purposes but it is used for a number of other purposes in factories, hospitals, research centers and many more. All these places directly deal with the health of nation and its people and thus serving them impure water can be a big disaster. Water for various purposes is gathered from different sources like ponds, lakes, rivers and seas. The level of impurity increases as big the area of water storage is. Earlier, sea water was not used in water treatment plants due to its salty nature but as the technology improved and better water treatment devices were launched, even sea water was considered for water purification.

There are some specific minerals and chemicals whose characteristics help them to cut down impurities present in any kind of water. The most popular chemical in this category is chlorine, which is used with the help of chlorinators. Chlorine consists of compounds such as chloramines or chlorine dioxide that makes it a strong oxidant. These oxidants are capable of killing many harmful bacteria and micro-organisms at a rapid rate. The chemical nature of chlorine is of a toxic gas, which is dangerous if released during its use.

Chlorine is also generated at a massive pace in various water treatment plants by electrolyzing some common salt solutions. For easy and safe use of chlorine, it is combined with sodium hypochlorite, which proves out to be an inexpensive solution. This solution releases free chlorine when dissolved in water. The liquid attained through this combination is not only cheap but it proves out to be much safer in comparison to solid chlorine or gas. Apart from chlorine, ozone and zinc are also used as effective agents for water purification by large number of water treatment plants and factories.
