We are very dependent on our cars these days. We must go to work, take our kids to school, and go to the grocery store. Thus, it is very important to have repairs done as quickly as possible when mechanical problems arise. For this reason, it is easy for auto repair fraud to be a big problem. The National Association of Attorneys General has recently appointed an automotive repair task force in response to a case of automobile repair fraud that was brought against a major corporation. Forty three states were assigned $200,000 for use in reforming the auto repair industry.

Because most cars have very sophisticated equipment now, many people feel that they must blindly trust repair shops and accept whatever price they are charged. Even though you may really need that major repair, you will still have an opinion in the end as to whether it was done well or not. If you think it was not done well, no bargain price will be low enough. Be sure to look at the finished work. Doing so, you will be able to tell if used car parts have been used to replace your damaged car parts.

Researching complaints against auto repair companies through resources like the Better Business Bureau can help make finding a reliable repair shop easier. Try getting a family member or friend to refer an auto repair shop, then you can feel more comfortable that you will be treated fairly.

Make sure you understand everything that the mechanic says and if not, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be sure to get a written estimate of the cost of repairs, especially in the case of engine repair work. Make sure they know that they must have your authorization before performing any repairs.

Your uneasy feeling about taking your car to the mechanic for repairs may be well-formed, since the National Highway Safety Administration estimates that billions of dollars are lost each year to fraudulent auto repair work. It's too bad, but there are repair shops that will charge you for things that do not even need to be repaired or will overcharge you on repair costs. It might be a good idea to tell the mechanic that you want your used car parts back from your car after the repair work is complete. While it is not a foolproof way to prevent fraud, it might make them think twice before trying to rip you off.
