There are interesting historical tidbits that throw light on the origination of the age-old Christian tradition of Church mass. For instance, there are three unique masses that are held during Christmas every year. Most people do not understand the significance of these traditional celebrations. Here’re some historical references that point to the significance of Church masses in history:
• Telesphorus, the second Bishop of Rome first declared in between 125-136 AD that church masses should be held to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
• Pope Julius I and a few other leaders of the Christian order declared that 25th December is the date of Christ’s birth in the year 350 AD
• The first Church mass was celebrated on the occasion of Jesus Christ’s birth in 354 AD
• Pope Sixtus III first began the midnight mass and the concept of the Christmas Crib in Rome in 400 AD. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore held these occasions.
• In 500AD for the first time bells were seen in Church compounds to announce church masses
• In the year 1223 St. Francis of Assisi first began the tradition of Christmas Carols as part of formal church services and nativity scenes.
Till date three unique masses are held during Christmas to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. They are:
1. The Angel’s Mass, which is also popularly known as the Midnight Mass.
2. The Shepherd’s Mass, which is also popularly called the Dawn Mass.
3. The Mass Of The Divine Word, which is also known as the Christmas Day Mass
Of course, apart from these there are the regular Sunday Masses that are held to commemorate the rebirth of Christ during his resurrection. Variously, the occasion has also been described as the Christianity’s acknowledgement of the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. The Holy Communion for instance, which is often held as a part of Church Mass, attempts to recreate the setting of Christ’s Last Supper.
