A-star Automatic comes with the same engine as manual A-star. It comes with the identical specifications, 67PS at 6200rpm and 90Nm of peak torque at 3500rpm. But the engine gets a new partner – the autobox. Autobox comes with various modes for different driving conditions. Apart from the regular parking, neutral and reverse modes, the drive itself is of four modes – L, 2,D-3 and D.
Comfort comes with a premium, one cannot deny this fact! Considering the Indian road infrastructure and traffic conditions, India should be the world of cars with automatic gear boxes. But the mileage conscious Indian buyers and conservative manufacturers doesn’t want to try their hands.

Even in the Indian two wheeler industry, the automatic scooter has a decent market share although the major sales volume comes only from geared motorcycles. But you hardly recogonise an affordable vehicle with automatic transmission. Maruti which tried it with Wagon-R AT wishes to give it a try with A-star Automatic this time. Let’s see the how the A-star AT drives.

Visibly, there is almost no difference between A-star AT and A-star MT. However, A-star AT VXi gets an automatic badge at the rear to tell its an autobox. Inside the A-star there is no change except the auto gear stick with different modes. The absence of clutch pedal and instrument panel which shows the modes of automatic are other changes.

The L and 2 mode are meant for city traffic conditions. The D-3 and D meant for high speed driving. A-star AT zooms past 100kmph in D-3 with ease and in ‘D’rive, it is capable of doing 140kmph. A-star Automatic is a proper auto with a torque converter, not the cheap clutchless manual or power sapping CVT system. You would never feel driving an automatic in the city. In the highway, the performance is commedndable. Only when overtaking long buses or mass movers, you need to switch to lower modes.

Maruti claims the mileage of A-star automatic is 17kmpl. In our test drive from Delhi to Agra, it returned 12.5 kmpl. Considering our sporty driving, it is impressive. But you need to work out different modes like the manual to get the best mileage or performance.

A-star Automatic comes in the VXi variant only! It has all the features of A-star variant like A/C, integrated music system, front and rear power windows and power steering. In addition it gets ABS.

A-star AT is priced at Rs4,34,535 (Rs49,908 more than A-star manual VXi), ex-showroom.

The need for automatic always exists. Though its a niche, customers are waiting just for a better automatic which doesn’t burn their pocket too. A-star Automatic fills the same. It is zippy yet offers decent mileage too.
