This festive season is going to be one hell of a blaster with a spate of suv’s waiting in the pipeline. The Mahindra xuv500 has already shown its impact and the company had no other option but to stop the bookings due to huge orders just flooding in. The Mahindra xuv500 was supposed to face its nemesis in the form of the Tata Merlin which for some reason was again delayed. This time around though, the car is expected to make it to the roads in just a matter of few days.
This festive season has already seen huge dhamakas with the launch of Toyota Etios Diesel and Etios Liva Diesel, Chevrolet Beat Diesel and the New Maruti Swift being the most exceptional one. These cars did their bit to woo the audience. However now it is the time of the off road enthusiasts who are gearing up for some serious rubber hunt this festive season and this thirst was quenched by the xuv 500. Mahindra also not wanting to be left behind came with its Bolero at an attractive price tag of Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh.
One of the reasons the SUV segment is fairly not much seen is due its higher costs which come at a starting price of 6 lakh and upwards. However the trend is changing for the better and the giant of car making in India, Maruti is also all set to launch its Ertiga by Jan 2012. Apart from the costs one of the reasons the SUV market in India suffers a setback is because of the mileage.
However the Tata Merlin is going to cost more than the existing Safari which is clearly evident from the facelift, the refinements and high quality materials used. Tata Motors has not yet disclosed the Tata Merlin price for the Indian market, but as far as the reports speculated and considering the fact the car is an up graded version of the Tata Safari the Merlin can be expected to start around a price tag of Rs 9 to 11 lakh price brackets.
The Tata Merlin is expected to come in diesel engine only and will have two drive options. The Tata Merlin 4 X 2 will come with flared halogen headlamps and tail lamps, Stability system, traction system, tire pressure monitoring system, Audio system with AUX, USB, Bluetooth connectivity, multifunctional steering, leather upholstery, cruise control, automatic climate control, ABS, EBD, Engine immobilizer etc. The Tata Merlin 4 X 4 will also be host to almost all the options of its two drive cousin. The heart of the Tata Merlin is made of a 2.2 l DiCOR engine and is expected to give an average mileage of 10 Kmpl for the busy city streets and a cool 14 Kmpl on the long drives similar to most of its other contemporaries. The 2.2 l DiCOR engine powered car will roar at a maximum of 140 bhp at 4000 rpm. The car delivers a maximum torque of 320 Nm at 2700 rpm. The car hits the 160- 165 Kmh and clocks 100 meter dash in 15-16 seconds.
