“My dog is my best friend,” That’s what we oftentimes hear from pet owners and I bet that includes you!
When did you acquire your dog? Lately, a few months ago… most people had their first dog when they were still kids. Children ask their parents to buy or adopt a puppy. One of the main reasons is for them to have a pet to play with. Kids want a dog to have a playmate and companion. Every kid whenever they see a puppy or a dog you’ll notice their face to brighten, they smile at you and say “Oh how cute, what’s the name of your dog? Can I get her?” “Oh sure” that’s your instant reaction. If you give them a chance…the kid and your dog will start playing a game. That’s how kids and dogs are…they love to play games.
Early in their age, kids develop a certain bonding and friendship with their canine friend. They play games together…you’ll probably say “I’m not a kid anymore but me and my dog understand each other, we develop a certain bonding too. We play games together.”
Definitely! Dogs develop bonding with their masters when you pay attention to them and you play games together. Your pet may not be able to play the same as a human being but they learn to understand and communicate with you in a certain way. Playing a game with your dog is at the same time training it to respect you. Plus you are giving your pet a good exercise, developing and strengthening his or her muscles and you make you dog happier.
Dogs get bored too. That’s the reason why they chew anything around the house…even your favorite shoes! When you play games with your dog, you remove the boredom and the bad habit of chewing.
What kind of games can you play with your dog?
- The most popular among kids…Hide and Seek! First, ask your dog to stay, then go to the kitchen and call the name, if your dog follows you in the kitchen…ask your pet to stay again hide behind a couch…call your pet to find you. Don’t forget to praise your dog and give a treat when he or she finds you. That’s a re-enforcement to keep the game going.
- Tug of War-Male kids love to play this game with their pets. They would give their dog a toy and pretend they’ll take it away. The dog moves real quickly, grabs the toy and hold on to it while his master is pulling. Kids do this repeatedly until they get tired. Don’t let your dog win or else he’ll take over.
- Fetch or Catch-Throw a ball of Frisbee to your doggy and ask him or her to catch it and give it back to you. Some dogs are really good in catching anything you throw them. You can start training your dog to catch something by using treats first. Ask your dog to stay on a sitting position, and then throw a treat on her mouth to catch. Praise your dog and give a pat on the head when he/she catches a treat. Once your dog learn how to catch, try a ball then give a treat for a job well done.
- Chase- Dogs love to run and chase …If you run and call his or her name your doggy will just run side by side with you. Most kids love to race with their dog and well the dogs always win the race. But this is a lot of fun and a great exercise for both of you.
There are so many games you can play with your dog. You just need to be creative and have fun while playing with your pet. The great thing about playing games with your dog is you create respect, understanding, and some sort of good communication with each other.
Playing games with your dog creates bonding...and that’s the very reason why many pet owners say “My dog is my best friend.” When you play games you both have fun and a great time together…
