What’s in a name, they say? A rose would still smell good with any other name. Lines like these can be heard many times in day to day life. But a car company feeling the need to issue a memo regarding the usage of the name of the brand is something that is not heard everyday.

What’s in a name, they say? A rose would still smell good with any other name. Lines like these can be heard many times in day to day life.Chevrolet Cruze But a car company feeling the need to issue a memo regarding the usage of the name of the brand is something that is not heard everyday.
Abbreviating names is a common practice and many times the abbreviated names have a certain kind of fondness attached to them. But, it seems like this abbreviation of names has not gone down too well with Chevrolet management and they circulated a memo regarding the same. According to news leaked to a leading car magazine, the memo read, "We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward."
Apparently, Chevrolet now feels that the memo asking employees to stop calling the company Chevy was "poorly worded". But the step was taken to use a constant name for the brand for marketing purposes and a line in the issued statement explained it. The line read, “In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet, and need to move toward a consistent brand name for advertising and marketing purposes. The memo in question was one step in that process.”
The memo was signed by Alan Bate, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, the GM division’s vice president for marketing. But the memo didn’t go down well and Chevy…err...Chevrolet officials had to issue a statement that covered up by saying that such a debate is an indicator that Chevrolet is a much loved brand and that people feel passionately for it.
The company statement also went on to clarify that they were not trying to discourage people from using the name ‘Chevy’ and that they loved it too. The company expressed its gratitude to the fans and customers and their love for Chevrolet products.
The new statement was an attempt to help matters and tried to keep the people from getting disappointed by the old memo. One of the lines in the statement read, “We hope people around the world will continue to fall in love with Chevrolet and smile when they call their favourite car, truck or crossover 'Chevy.'” The current line-up of Chevrolet in India includes Chevrolet Cruze Optra, Tavera, Spark, Beat, Aveo and UVA.
