The Indian hatchback market never fails to make headline. With the heightened price war and threat posed by Ford Figo competing car makers are getting their act together to avoid loosing their market share. As a step in that direction Hyundai Motor is all set to launch a diesel variant of Hyundai i10. HW Park, MD, Hyundai India hinted at the launch of Hyundai i10 diesel but did not provide many details regarding the time of launch.
Park did not seem too concerned about Nissan Micra but he did hint about the company being on its toes to meet the challenges thrown by the new Maruti Wagaon R and Ford Figo.
Hyundai Motors have lots of models lined up to be launched in India soon. The first one to come would be the Hyundai Santa Fe mid-size crossover sports utility vehicle. Santa Fe would be imported as a CBU (completely-built unit) and launched in the fourth quarter of this year. “We will launch one new model every year, one face-lifted version and a model year model,” said Park. Apart from the Hyundai Santa Fe, Indian market is also going to get a new Sonata YF (sedan), refurbished i20 and i10 models.
Work is also being done on a new compact car to be placed below Santro. Park said, “Development of the sub-Santro model is at evaluation stage, on schedule, at Namyang (its R&D centre). Look-wise, it will not be small though it will have a similar cutting-edge design.”
Also, the company confired that it is has no plans to phase out the Hyundai Santro as the car manages to sell 8,000 units every month. “Demand for Santro still exists,” said Park.
Hyundai is also seeing a steady rural market growth. “It is 31% now and steadily seeing a growth of 5%. We are expanding in rural pockets using the hub-and-spoke model,” said Park. Indian auto maker Maruti has a very strong presence in the rural market and Hyundai would follow the same strategy, he added.
Hyundai India exports to 120 countries and managed to sell 2,89,863 units last year. The company’s market share reached 20.7% from 20.6% and it has about 320 dealerships across the country.
