The Rack and Pinion system assists in power steering of many vehicles including Minivans, Cars and some Trucks. The Rack and Pinion system consists of a steering Rack and Pinion shaft and these two components work together in the power steering process of your vehicle. Rack and Pinions units of a vehicle often lasts upwards of 100,000 miles.A Rack and Pinion gear-set is enclosed in a metal tube, with each end of the Rack protruding from the tube which is connected to the tie-rod at the each end of the Rack. The Pinion gear is attached to the steering shaft so as to when you turn the steering wheel of your Car, the gear spins moving the Rack. The tie rod at each end of the Rack connects to the steering arm on to the spindle which converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion much needed to make the wheels turn easier of your Car. On most Cars, it takes three to four complete revolutions of the steering wheel to make the wheels turn from lock to lock end.
The power-steering system has a differently designed Rack and Pinion unit though as it contains a cylinder with a piston in the middle which is connected to the Rack. There are two fluid ports, one on the either side of the piston supplying higher pressure fluid to one side of the piston as it forces the piston to move, which in turn moves the Rack providing the much required power assist when turning your Car.
Latest small Cars have lower steering ratios than larger Cars and Trucks. The lower ratio gives the steering a quicker response as you don't have to turn the steering wheel as much to get the wheels to turn a given distance which is much a desirable trait in latest Cars. Some Cars have variable-ratio steering, which uses a Rack and pinion gear-set that has a different tooth pitch in the center than it has on the outside which makes the Car respond more quickly when trying to make a swift turn.
There are a couple of key components in a Car's power steering in addition to the Rack and Pinion as the hydraulic power for the steering is provided by a rotary vane pump. This pump is driven by the Car's engine via a belt and pulley which contains a set of retractable vanes that spin inside an oval chamber. As the vanes spin, they pull hydraulic fluid from the return line at low pressure and force it into the outlet at high pressure. This amount of flow is provided by the pump depending on the Car's engine speed as it is designed to provide the required flow when the engine is idling and pumps more fluid when the engine is running at faster speeds. The pump contains a pressure-relief valve to make sure that the pressure does not get too high, especially at high engine speeds as much fluid is being pumped for smooth functioning.
You may need to know the various symptoms of a failing Rack and Pinion unit and its parts to diagnose the problem accurately. You could always use the Car's service manual for your particular vehicle for further assistance. Repairing of your Car's Rack & Pinion unit could be beyond the abilities of a do-it-yourself repair as it often requires specialized skills and tools to find accurately the root cause of the problem. In case, if you are not confident of pulling the said repairs, you could always take the help of a Car mechanic.
