Suzhou's history dates back to the early seventh century BC when the semi-mythical ruler, He Lu, of the Kingdom of Wu is said to have founded the city. With the completion of the Grand Canal during the Sui dynasty (581-618 AD), Suzhou became a thriving commercial district significant for transporting silk along its dense network of canals and rivers.
The manufacturing of silk became dominant in Suzhou, during the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) which had a tremendous influence on fashion and culture of the city. Suzhou emerged as fashion capital of ancient China that exuded sophistication, luxury, and a hub of rich and the famous. The city's good fortune ran out during the 1860's due to its occupation in the Taiping rebellion and in World War II by the Japanese. It regained its reputation over the last many years and was awarded "Excellent Tourist City of China” in 1998. The famous Italian missionary and merchant Marco Polo (1254 – 1324) once praised Suzhou as "The Oriental Venice".
