Bulldogs are a particular breed of dog sometimes called an English bulldog or a British bulldog. These dogs are well known for their very distinctive features. These are the wrinkled folds along the muzzle, short stout nose, and naturally short tail. Although well known and once bred for these distinctive features, these traits can cause some serious conditions for the bulldog. Luckily, with proper care ailments commonly associated with these features can be avoided.

The wrinkled folds along the muzzle are also called “rope” which collects a great deal of moisture. The bulldogs own saliva can become trapped under these folds as well as humidity from the air. An overheated dog will sweat in an effort to cool oneself, but the sweat often becomes trapped in the folds as well.

The extra moisture found within the folds can cause infections which can cause bulldogs a lot of discomfort not to mention the health risk. Therefore, it is imperative that owners of bulldogs clean out these folds on a daily basis. This will help to dry out some of that excess moisture and prevent infections.

Bulldogs are called a ‘short-faced’ breed because of its short muzzle. Short-faced breeds, including bulldogs, are more susceptible to respiratory problems because of the obstruction problems. Respiratory problems can be multiplied if they get overheated. Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat so must be kept in well ventilated areas preferably in an air conditioned environment. As bulldogs have such a high sensitivity to heat, owners in warmer climates must be especially cognizant of keeping their bulldog safe and healthy. This means that during summer months, bulldogs must be kept in the shade and go outside for shorter intervals mainly in the morning or later in the evening.

These respiratory problems can be compounded by a bulldogs weight as well. Bulldogs can become overweight very easily and extra weight makes it more difficult to breathe. Exercising bulldogs on a regular basis will help manage the dogs weight and prevent potential breathing or lung issues.

One final feature which can potentially cause health problems is the naturally short tail. Bulldogs are known for these tails, but if the tail is too tight and close to the body it can cause discomfort for some dogs. This can easily be remedied with regular cleaning and little bit of ointment to prevent chaffing.

Bulldogs are a well bred dog with particular features. These features can easily be cared for to prevent any health issues.
