The Scriptures show that love is from God. In fact, the Bible says "God is love." Love is one of the primary characteristics of God. Likewise, God has granted to us the capacity for love, since we are created in His image. This capacity for love is one of the ways in which we are "created in the image of God." The Greek language (the language of the New Testament) uses four different words to describe and define love. Only three of these words are used in the Bible.

The Scriptures show that love is from God. In fact, the Bible says "God is love." Love is one of the primary characteristics of God. Likewise, God has granted to us the capacity for love, since we are created in His image. This capacity for love is one of the ways in which we are "created in the image of God."
The Greek language (the language of the New Testament) uses four different words to describe and define love. Only three of these words are used in the Bible.
There's eros, which is sexual or romantic love. Phileo, which is a brotherly love toward someone we really like. Agape, which is the deepest love, which is based on doing good things for another person. And lastly, there is storgay, which is the love of one's relatives. It is a relatively unknown word that is used only twice. However, the most commonly used Greek word translated "love" in the New Testament is "agape." This love is represented by God's love for us. It is a non-partial, sacrificial love probably best exemplified by God's provision for our rebellion:
"For God so loved (agape) the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
The gift of God's son as a provision for sin was given to all humans, regardless of who we are. God's love is unconditional. According to the Bible, love is caring in action. God's love is a giving type of love.
The word of God describes what love (charity) is and is not in 1 Corinthians 13:1-13.
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profits me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envies not; charity vaunts not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Beareth all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abides faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."
True love is as strong as death, it casts out or has no fear and is willing to lay aside itself even unto death for a brother. Love must be in word and deed, not simply with our lips with our hearts far away from it. We love God when we keep His commandments. Husbands must love their wives and respect them, even as Christ does the church. Wives are to love, listen to and honor their own husbands. If we love our children, we will correct them in measure. A friend (God) loves at all times, and there is a friend (His Holy Spirit) that sticks closer than a brother. Love brings about unity and perfection. All should love their neighbor as themselves. All men will know that we are Christ's disciples by the love, fellowship and friendship that Christians have for one another. We are warned that the love of many will grow cold because of the increase of sin and Satan in the last age. Love fulfills all of the law and cover all sins or offenses.
"God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus." – Max Lucado
"Love without faith is as bad as faith without love." – Henry Ward Beecher
"In necessary things, unity; in doubtful things, liberty; in all things, charity. God loves each of us as if there were only one of us." – Augustine
