Gestational diabetes is a condition in which a pregnant woman suffers from higher then normal blood glucose levels. Medical science does not know the exact cause of this form of diabetes but many think it is linked to the stress of pregnancy on the woman's body.

There are three main types of diabetes. Type 1 is caused when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the production of insulin. Type 2 is caused when the body begins to ignore insulin. Gestational diabetes occurs during the last few weeks of pregnancy and is a response to hormone shifts and the body not being able to compensate with enough insulin.

Here are the commonest gestational diabetes symptoms.

Having gestational diabetes does not mean the baby will be born with diabetes; however, if gestational diabetes goes untreated or unmonitored, there is high risk for health complications for both mother and infant. This can result in the baby producing too much insulin in the womb and gaining too much weight, thereby, resulting in premature birth.

The last part of the pregnancy or the third trimester can see a hormonal shift that upsets this balance and places the woman at risk of developing gestational diabetes. This might happen in part because during pregnancy the placenta which connects the baby to the uterus by the umbilical cord is also producing hormones as it helps to shift nutrients from the mother to the fetus.

For unexplained reasons, statistics show that women who belonged to the following ethnicity: African, Hispanics, American Indian or Asian are prone to develop gestational diabetes during their pregnancies.

Blurry vision. Your eyes are absorbing water too. So they get pushed out of shape. And you can no longer see well. It seems like one of the least important high blood sugar effects at first. But you can see why diabetes can lead to blindness in the long run.

The expectant mother will be allowed to eat 150 grams of carbohydrates, at the least, three days before the test. The objective is to get the fasting glucose level which will be compared with the normal blood sugar level to arrive at a conclusion whether there is gestational diabetes or not.

Although a growling stomach is certainly no stranger to a pregnant woman, any extreme feelings may be signs of a problem.

Though the woman is eating more than routine still she loses weight. The body has to break down the fat and protein reserves for the production of energy.

More information can be found on how to use these food groups by following the diabetic food pyramid. By following a meal plan for gestational diabetes you will limit the amount of sugar that enters you bloodstream. This will help to control the blood sugar level.

Majority women suffer from only few of these Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes. So it becomes important for every woman to be screened for gestational diabetes at or around the end of the second trimester of pregnancy. Even if you are suffering from gestational diabetes there isn't any need to worry.
