Richard Hamann, a BMW tuner, racer, and the founder of a company that sold after market BMW rims and other car components, has died at the age of 53. Hamann died after battling lung cancer.
Hamann was well known for constructing and selling aftermarket BMW rims through his company, Hamann Motorsport. The company began selling aftermarket BMW rims in 1986 and gradually began to offer rims for other major car brands throughout the 1990s. BMW rims from Hamann Motorsport were renowned for their exceptional aesthetics and their high quality performance.
However, Hamann was known for more than just BMW rims and other car parts. He was an established racer before the company was created, with more than 300 podium finishes over the course of his career. Many of his most successful races were behind the wheel of a BMW, which made the move into BMW rims and associated accessories an obvious choice for Hamann in the late 1980s. Most notably, Hamann won three Special Touring Car trophies in a BMW M1 racecar. Over the years, he participated in a number of race types, including DTM, Formula 3 and Gruppe C. Despite his success as a racer, Hamann gained the most recognition from fellow car tuners as he began to introduce highly customized vehicles in the 1980s.
BMW rims from Hamann were and are well known for their quality and renowned for their looks. The company is among the most respected names in aftermarket BMW rims, and their BMW rims are respected for perfect balance, light alloys that don't obstruct the handling of BMW vehicles, and superior construction with light alloys. BMW owners can also choose from other aftermarket parts provided by the company, each of which was tested and designed at the facility that Hamann's company built for this exact purpose.
For a BMW tuner, Hamann was very well known. Hamann Motorsport established a state of the art facility to test potential modifications and parts such as BMW rims and wheels. Hamann himself was instrumental in a number of modification designs that revolutionized BMW tuning. He was widely recognized as a major authority on BMW components, which led to success for Hamann Motorsport among BMW owners and drivers with Ferraris, Aston Martins, and other luxury vehicles as the company expanded throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
As Hamann died at the age of 53, many in the racing and car modification industries feel that his contribution to the BMW was astounding.
Hamann Motorsport will continue to sell BMW rims and other car components. In a statement regarding their founder's death, the company noted Hamann's passion for tuning and quality aftermarket car components.
