Realizing the demand and need for a cleaner environment, more and more Japanese taxi companies are willing invest in electric vehicles. Nobuo Ide, one of the federation’s top executives stated, ‘‘We are encouraging the taxi industry to introduce low-pollution vehicle.

According to the Japan Federation of Hire-Taxi Association, only 5 electric vehicles have been estimated to be used as taxicabs nationwide as of December 31. Realizing the demand and need for a cleaner environment, more and more Japanese taxi companies are willing invest in electric vehicles. Nobuo Ide, one of the federation’s top executives stated, ‘‘We are encouraging the taxi industry to introduce low-pollution vehicle. Since our customers who experienced a ride in an EV have responded positively, electric vehicles may also stimulate demand for our taxi services.’’ Last year, Kashiwazaki Taxi Co in Kashiwazaki, Niigatan Prefecture, became the first Japanese taxi company to adopt an EV by adding a Mitsubishi Motors Corp i-MiEV compact car to its taxi fleet. Its initiative was followed by similar moves by taxi companies in Tokyo and Kyoto Prefecture.

Even though, the auto industry officials have expressed their concerns about using electric vehicles as cabs, mainly because of the limitation of electricity chargers required to run long miles on the car and the storage space in the car, this green initiative in Japan is definitely an inspiring step to introduce eco-friendly measures on the streets, reduce the carbon footprint, and encourage a cleaner environment that respects our planet.
