Man generally keeps fish, cows, dogs and cats as pet. Exotic pets are found in very few houses and are very rare. The exotic pets can be an amphibian, reptile or rodent. Though these animals are rarely found in houses but they are easily available on the pet stores. Sugar gliders, anthropods, kinkajous, chinchillas, fennec foxes and tortoise are easily available in pet stores.
Though the term exotic pets refer to the unusual pets but in reality most of these pets are common in the houses. In today’s parlance exotic pets often refers to the pets that are imported from the foreign lands. The exotic pets that can be commonly found in many houses are llamas and Bengal cats. Man is taming these animals for a considerable time and there is no reason for classifying them as exotic. However, proper care should be taken and if required some extra attention can also be given for their healthy growing.
Exotic pets that are in abundance in nature can only be domesticated in houses. Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of World Flora and Fauna had prohibited the trade of exotic pets that are marked as endangered. Anyone disobeying this law can be penalized for committing a legal offence. It is necessary for a person to get a sanction from the animal conservation department for domesticating any type of exotic pet. Without the permission, domestication is not possible now under any circumstances.
Exotic pets require more care of the owner than the common pets. Exotic pets are generally wild animals. Not all the veterinary doctors are skilled for handling the problems of the exotic pets. The highly skilled veterinary surgeons can only treat the problems of the exotic pets. So the owner should know from beforehand where to contact a good and specialist veterinary so that it can be taken to at times of emergency. The cost that is incurred for treating the exotic pets is much higher than the cost incurred for treating a common pet. The owner should know all these details before approaching with the plan of becoming an exotic pet owner.
The disease of the exotic pets in most of the cases affects the human beings. Sometimes the human diseases also affect the health of the exotic pets. As the owner does not get ample of information regarding the exotic pets he might face difficulty to raise it. The life of the pet can also become endangered if the habitat, habit and diet of the pet are unknown to its owner.
