The Volkswagen up! May be a small car but it could well be next big king maker for the company and probably become the successful heir to the original car of the people, the Beetle. In fact the very name ‘Volkswagen' literally means 'people's car' and with the addition of the word ‘Up’, VW is looking to triumph with the cause of bringing up a people’s car for the next generation.
The car made its debut at the 2007 in the form of various concepts. The car has undergone a huge sea of change from the initial Beetle inspired rear engine and rear wheel drive and is now currently going to be launched in the front transverse engine and steering. However the style statement of the car remains true to the concept car with some minute changes to the wheels and some trimming in the looks department. The car measures just 3.54 meters in length making the Up completely different from the current lot with its unique design, the wheel-at-each-corner stance, the smiley face and the one-piece glass tailgate. It can be specified in a range of trim levels that give the car its own unique character.
The Up also gives way for some fun and spice by making way for higher end variants to come with dashboards and door trims that look similar to the shades of the car. The front seats may look narrow but they offer sufficient comfort and support. In spite of its small size and footprint the Volkswagen up is a serious contender for space with its huge headroom and legroom, both at the front and rear. The car comes in two engine variants of three cylinder MPI multi-point fuel injection type. The base level car starts with the horsepower of 60 bhp and the high end variant goes up to 75 bhp.
Similar to most small cars the high end bhp car also need some warming up before it can show its true colours. Once the car is heated up, you are off to a nice journey with its offbeat thrum. In the busy city streets the car easily pulls up the sub-1,000 kg kerb weight with the 75 bhp. The power of the engine is translated to the front wheel of the car through a five-speed manual transmission and some slick shifting as well helps the cause. In the near future the Volkswagen up will also come with an automatic gear option as well.
On the whole the car is best in class in terms of ride and handling. The steering though might give you some poor feedback, but on the corners it is as efficient as possible. The short wheelbase of the car does add up to the look of the car but with the tight suspensions of the car might be hard on the high speeds. The three door variant of the Volkswagen up will be one of the unique cars with the monocoque body style and also comes in a five door variant which could be a mini MPV or a crossover Up.
The Volkswagen up with the 75 bhp has an engine of 999cc with three inline cylinders accompanied by a five speed manual gear transmission. The car powers up to a maximum of 75 bhp at around 6200 rpm. The maximum torque of the car is 95 Nm at 3,000-4, 3000 rpm. The car breaches the 100 kilometer mark in 13.2 seconds. The car reaches a top speed of 171 kmh.
