Volkswagen had started the year 2009 with the motto “maximum adventure and minimum consumption” and thus was born the new BlueSport Technology- a roadster to be launched in the near future. It boasts about incredible fuel economy and drop-dead sporty looks and performance. This car was premiered in Detroit in the month of January 2009, although it is known to go into mass production in North America only by 2013.
It is claimed to be a prize catch at just 13 feet in length, with a 96 inch wheelbase, a front-track of 58.5 inches and a rear-track of 60 inches. Hence it seems to be much smaller than an Audi but somewhat similar to a Porsche Boxter, which is impressive. It has been designed by an Italian stylist named Walter Da Silva. It weighs less than 1200 kilograms. VW has instilled a turbo diesel engine in it elevates its performance level even better than expected. Its Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) with a capacity of 2.0 liters makes 180hp (134kW) from 4,200rpm and a hefty torque of 350Nm made from just 1,750rpm.
It is capable of accelerating speeds from 0-100 km/h within a miniscule time of 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 260 km/h. The best part of its eco friendly features is that it emits only approximately 113 g/km of toxic carbon dioxide. Its gearbox is a trusted quick-shifting DSG with 6 forward gears and one reverse gear. Additional features include bi-xenon LED headlights and a touch screen that helps view and controls major information while on the drive also not to forget it’s a convertible that takes just seconds to detach the top. It is a concurrence of brilliant technology and an eternal VW design that makes this vehicle a remarkable sports car. It has dual clutch transmission system- the most economical and speedy transmissions in the world- shifts power to the rear wheels.
Walter Da Silva has showed amazing technological fascination when it comes to the designs of the interior of the car. The leather upholstered seats are perfectly adapted to their lightweight construction. The touch screen is what catches the eye in the interior design. The magnificent pick up speed of 100km/h in just 6.6 seconds has a positive role to play in the car’s low fuel consumption of just 4.3 liters every 100km. It also features an auto start-stop technology and energy regeneration which together falls under the “Eco Mode”. The BlueSport Concept roadster is claimed to save up to 0.2 liter per 100 km.
VW says that BlueSport would hit the showrooms at a starting price of $30,000 depending on factors like the engine that is installed in the final product. For a car with such compact dimensions it has reasonable amount of space in the cabin and with two cargo holds with a capacity of 6.4 cubic feet. The engine sounds more like a gasoline one than a diesel one. A step on the accelerator unleashes a turbocharger whistle along with a heady turn of speed.
This is a fascinating car gorgeous to look at and an adventure to drive in with high eco friendly performance and lower fuel costs it is a car to look out for because not only does it stands apart in the vast futuristic car market but also is a worthy competitor among cars that are priced twice the cost.
