Clash of Titans: Skoda Yeti and Hyundai Santa Fe

Two auto giants – Skoda and Hyundai – are all set to launch their brand new SUVs into the Indian market within months of each other. Both the carmakers do not have a strong presence in the SUV market and with these products they are aiming at filling the gap in their Indian portfolio.

So, let us take a look at what Skoda Yeti and Hyundai Santa Fe have at offer for the SUV/MUV buyers.
The Skoda Yeti is expected to have both petrol and diesel engine options.

The petrol variants will be available with two different capacity engines – the 1.2L, 1197cc, turbo charged, DOHC petrol engine capable of producing 104.7 PS at 5000rpm and 175Nm of maximum torque at 1500-3500rpm. The 1.8L, 1798cc, turbo charged, DOHC petrol engine with six-speed manual transmission gearbox and with 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) capable of producing maximum power of 160PS at 4500-6200rpm with the maximum torque of 250Nm at 1500-4500rpm.


The 2.0L, 1968cc, turbo charged diesel engine with 5-speed manual transmission gearbox produces maximum power of 110PS at 4200rpm with 250Nm of maximum torque at 1500-2500rpm.The 6-speed manual transmission gearbox in the 2.0L diesel engine type with advanced Haldex clutch is capable of producing 140PS of maximum power at 4200rpm with 320Nm of maximum torque at 1750-2500rpm.

The Skoda Yeti's styling is very good for a compact SUV and on the outside the car has features like stylish front radiator grill surrounded by four headlights with a very basic rear. The enhanced mudguards and silver under-body protection strips assist on rough terrain and the unique glass spaces of the windows on Skoda Yeti stand-out in design along with the electrically controlled two-part panoramic sunroof and crossways roofrack.


The inside of the car is at par with luxury models and Skoda Yeti boasts of comfortable seats with seat support and adjustable back rests. The VarioFlex system of three separate rear seats guarantees maximum variability of the interior and luggage space. And the option to choose combinations for the dashboard from 16 colours gives the car a customised personal touch.

On the other hand the new SUV Hyundai Santa Fe is expected to be powered by a 2188cc, 2.2L, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, CRTD, SOHC engine with 5 speed manual gear box that produces 154bhp power at 4000 rpm and 343Nm torque at 1800-2500 rpm. The Hyundai Santa Fe might also come with the automatic transmission option.

As for the new Hyundai Santa Fe, the designing has been given a lot of attention. The SUV is designed to look stylish and sporty with smooth flow-lines keeping the youth in mind. Santa Fe would have two-tone beige interiors with colour-coded wood and aluminium trim.

Standard features like power windows, keyless entry, A/C, CD/MP3 player, alloy wheels, ABS (Antilock Braking System), electronic stability control, and side airbags (dual front, front side and side curtain), automatic headlights, leather seats, dual-zone surround automatic climate control etc are all a part of the new Santa Fe.
While the Skoda Yeti is expected to be priced between Rs 13-14 lakh, Hyundai Santa Fe is expected to come with a price tag of around Rs 20 lakh.
