Whether you want to take a tour of Yellowstone, a San Francisco trip or visit somewhere else to celebrate our country’s birth, you’re sure to partake in a fabulous journey. Here are some little-known facts about the Fourth of July as we prepare to celebrate our country:
Fourth of July
• Benjamin Franklin originally wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.
• Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July.
• Nearly $349 million are spent each year to import flags, banners, decorations and emblems from China to celebrate the holiday.
• The first Fourth of July celebration was held at the White House in 1801.
• The Fourth of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.
• The National Anthem is actually set to the tune of an old drinking English drinking song called To Anacreon in Heaven.
• The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle in order to ensure that all of the colonies were considered to be equal.

• There are 30 places with the name “Liberty” in their name. The most populated location is Liberty, Missouri with 26,232 people.
• Eleven places have “independence” in their name.
• There is one place with “patriot” in its name – Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202 people.
There are five places with “America” in their name in the United States. The most populous one is American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents. Sadly, there are no places named “Tour America”.
Food
• Texas is the leader in production of cattle and calves. In fact, there’s a 1-in-6 chance that the beef on your backyard grill came from Texas.
• Three-quarters of the lettuce production in the US comes from California. You can thank them while eating your salad.
• Idaho and Washington account for one-half of the nation’s potatoes that you’ll be consuming in the form of potato salad and chips on the 4th of July.
Miscellaneous
• In 1989, an Adamstown, Pennsylvania flea market shopper purchased a $4 painting only to discover it hid an original 1776 painting of the Declaration of Independence, which Sotheby’s auctioned in 1991 for $2.42 million. It auctioned again in 2001 for $8.1 million.
• Calvin Coolidge is the only US President to be born on July 4th (1872). John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th, 1826 and James Monroe died July 4, 1831.
