Orange-brown leaves, beautiful climate and a hint of coolness in the air can mean only one thing – Fall is upon us! And with the Fall season comes a great opportunity to take a tour to Japan to see some of the most beautiful places in and around Japan in a whole new light with Fall colors. Here are some of the most beautiful places to visit in and around Tokyo this coming Fall:
Katsura Imperial Villa: Said to be the most beautiful Japanese garden in the world, this garden was completed in 1645 for the Katsura Family, who were members of Japan’s Imperial Family. Take a trip to Kyoto to see how each stone and plant was purposefully placed with precise detail and the garden has been carefully maintained since its completion more than 350 years ago. In the Fall, this garden is even more spectacular thanks to the diversity of color that explodes throughout the garden.
Kodaji Temple: Founded in 1605, this garden was dedicated to the memory of Toyotomi Hodeyoshi, a political leader at the time. The Temple is surrounded by gardens, teahouses and a bamboo grove that become highlighted by the red, yellow and orange that surrounds the area in the Fall months.
Kyoto Imperial Park: Perhaps the largest selection on the list, trips to Kyoto and the Imperial Park contains the Imperial Palace where Japanese emperors resided for more than 500 years and contains thousands upon thousands of gingko trees, a large pond and other types of native trees that change color during the Fall.
Nanzenji Temple: One of the most famous Zen temples in the world, this temple was built in 1291 as Emperor Kameyama’s retirement home, and then dedicated as a Zen temple after his death. Now, the grounds surrounding the temple contain several smaller temples and a garden that is particularly beautiful in Fall.
Kiyomizu Temple: At over 1,200 years old, this entry is oldest and perhaps most awe-inspiring addition to the list. One of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the temple offers breathtaking views from its main hall, which sits atop a 15-meter high veranda that sits on top of a hill. Beneath the main hall sits a spring and waterfall filled with sacred water, which is said to have healing properties. Indulging in this water is believed to grant good health, a long life and academic success.
