The responsibilities of being a car owner do not end once you learn how to drive. It really is quite easy to learn how to drive – but using the road properly, having consideration for other road users, and caring for your vehicle are other things that you are holding yourself responsible for, once you get your driving license.
There are a couple of other benefits from making sure that your car’s engine is properly maintained. First, you are essentially prioritizing your safety and that of other drivers and passengers by seeing that your car is worthy of being driven on public roads. Second, you are prolonging the life of your car, thereby reducing repair costs by following regular car maintenance routines.
Car Maintenance Tasks to Perform
Now, what are these car maintenance tasks that you need to perform as a car owner? Take a look at the following list:
• Make sure that your tires are not over or under inflated.
One of the most important parts of your car, which needs to be regularly checked aside from the engine is your set of tires. Good quality tires last for up to ten years when properly maintained. However, over or under inflation may cause the life of your tires to be shortened, not to mention the potential road hazards that it has. When your tires are over inflated, they become prone to blowing up once the tire comes in contact with sharp objects on the road. There are other disadvantages to having car tires, which are under inflated.
To make sure that you have the correct tire pressure, consult your car owner’s manual. Don’t follow the pressure indicated on the sidewalls of the tires since they are not necessarily accurate. Check if the treads of the tires are uneven, and rotate them regularly after about 6,000 miles to prevent an uneven wearing out of the treads.
• Check on the oil and fuel levels of your car.
Are the gauges of your car working properly? Are the oil and gas tanks filled properly? Have the gauges repaired if they are broken and make sure not to overfill the oil tank. If it gets over the appropriate level, it can result to leaks, which may lead to worse engine problems later on.
• Regularly clean your air filters.
Dirty air filters result to insufficient combustion and poor engine performance, while also contributing to air pollution. As such, it pays to make sure that your air filters are regularly cleaned.
• Before going on long trips, send the car over to the shop for tune-ups.
Lastly, have your vehicle checked by a professional before going on long trips. The mechanic may grease moving parts to prevent wear and tear, wash a few parts of the engine and replace some worn-out pieces. By following these car maintenance tips, you can ensure that your vehicle is worthy to be driven on the road.
