New figures suggest that more and more parents are risking their children’s safety by choosing to buy second hand car seats. Halfords Group recently revealed that 7% of its customers have admitted to buying a pre-owned car seat; an increase from 2% reported in 2009. The retailer suggests that money worries could be the cause for the increase in the seats, which are now mandatory for all children up to 135cm tall travelling by car. Financial concerns could also be the reason why many parents are choosing to sell on their car seats after their children have grown out of them.
Industry experts warn, however, that it’s difficult to tell how old a car seat is or if it has been involved in an accident if it is second-hand. There’s no guarantee that the instruction manuals will be included either, which means that many who purchase second-hand car seats may not be fitting the seats securely. Halfords also found that fifty-one percent of parents do not know how to check whether a car seat is fitted correctly, so this news is concerning.
