Positive versus Negative Emotions
Any organization benefits from an atmosphere of positivity; the emotions of joy, affection, enjoyment and pride lifts spirits and encourages innovative thoughts and actions. This perspective leads an overall environment of increased productivity. This contrasts sharply with negative emotions that promote narrow, selfish and self-centered behavior. Negative emotions like anxiety, envy, anger and scorn bring about a pattern of destructive attitudes and a defeatist approach to work. Their entire motivation revolves upon survival, which brings about specific behavioral patterns for short-term benefit. Positive emotions, on the other hand, lead to long-term advantages for the organization.

How to build Positive Emotions
Focusing on the past events and the negative emotions generated in the conflict or situation can only reinforce these negative emotions. The human mind is powerful and once attached to a certain pattern of negativity will continue in that vein without any change. The generation of positive emotions is of great significance to bring about a harmonious solution to any disagreement,. The mediator must make a conscious decision not to focus on negativity and make a genuine attempt to raise the spirits of the participants.

Asking questions that elicit positive responses is one way to build positive emotions. Participants who are encouraged to express their grievances and subsequently their ideas feel a sense of empowerment. The consideration of these ideas reinforces emotions such as trust, confidence and togetherness.

The Win-win Situation
The mediator is the fulcrum on which the entire process revolves and it is he or she who must nurture the environment of positivity. The mediation can culminate with the delineation of future goals for the parties. The mediator places an alternative agenda in place of the conflict with the active input of all participants. Energy, hope, optimism and the thrill of achievement all transform the ambience from one of dull and discontented negativity to one where affirmative and constructive attitudes prevail. This transformation benefits the entire workforce and through them the organization.
