EFL Teachers and Students:
Did you know that Wednesday, April 23, 2008 is a national day of books and reading? Some places also call it "Language Day" or pay tribute to England's William Shakespeare and Miguel Cervantes of Spain. Both writers, both born in different years, reportedly died the same day in 1616.
In conjunction with a day to honor and remember at least two of the most auspicious collaborators of literature, I thought I'd take the opportunity to divulge some recent statistics on reading published in hosting Colombia. Some of them I found quite frightening. What's it like in the country where you live and teach?
Reading in Colombia
In a 2005 study, Colombians read an average of only 1.5 (one point five) books per year! In surveys of why so few, technology and the Internet are cited as reasons mostly more than ever cracked a book. Television also bore a brunt of the blame for non-readers.
Back in 2000, however, the average number of books read is "up" to 2.4 (two point four) copies per year in Colombia. This is still well below all read before.
Incredulous, I surveyed hundreds of my fellow students and teachers of EFL ELT.
"How many books should be read in their school or college years? I asked.
For me in the U.S., most university courses require somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 or more books to read and / or referenced during a stay of four years. Many colleagues in Colombia and students cited a 20 - that is, twenty years, books to be read in a degree program in five years!
A five-year study
Here are some interesting statistics of the "Study of Reading Habits, Support Library book consumption in Colombia" (2005) that is conducted every five years. The next study is scheduled for 2010.
22% of Colombians say they have no books at home, in contrast to
4.1% of Mexicans say they have no books at home
7.7% of Colombians said they have over 100 books at home, in contrast to
24.6% of Mexicans said they have over 100 books at home
41% of Colombians over age 12 prefer reading books
26% prefer to read magazines and
32% prefer to read newspapers and other publications
79.7% of children and youth, said that despite reading the accessibility of technology and television
Hosting Colombia Cities Special Celebrations
There are 27 cities in Colombia and municipalities reportedly hosting Colombia celebrations and special events of today or this week. These include the following as reported in "El Tiempo" newspaper, April 20, 2008.
The cities are: Armenia, Rio Hacha, Barranquilla, Buenaventura, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Ipiales, Leticia, Cali, San Andres, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Cúcuta, Sincelejo, Ibague, Valledupar, Manizales, Florence, Medellin, Girardot, Neiva , Monteria, Pereira, Villavicencio, Popayán, Tunja, and Pasto.
If your area has a recognition of this day, why not encourage their students of English as a foreign language to participate. If not, then why not prepare some activities for students of English?
English language teachers and parents: If you do not read, and then to their students and children do not see the value in the development of this habit and skill. You need to set an example and help develop the pleasure reading and comprehension.
