When applying for jobs in government organizations applicants need to forward a resume which is written specifically for this purpose. This is called the Government resume. This is a complex resume writing task as resumes written for many government organizations or public service are not the same as the ones written for any other job. Therefore, if applicants wish to be considered for the job applied they need to ensure that the resume is written adhering to the special requirements of this employer category.

The Format of the Resume
As with all resumes this type too has a format which needs to be followed. There are four main formats for writing resumes. These are chronological, functional, combination and targeted. The type most commonly used for this type of resume is the chronological format. This means applicants need to ensure that they list their job experience starting with the most recent to the first job done. The chronological format is commonly used as it allows prospective employers to verify the types of jobs and when they were done easily. Hence, when writing the resume, applicants will have to emphasize on the achievements and qualifications during their work history. Applicants should keep in mind that all qualifications and achievements should pertain to the job opening. This is a very important element of writing the resume in the chronological format. If the applicant has employment records of positions which are not relevant to the current position being applied for, list them without elaborating on the achievements and job profile in those positions.

Writing the Resume
The government resume will have a section for applicants to fill in their personal information. Applicants will state their name, contact information, country of citizenship etc. The next section will have to be completed with a summary of the qualifications that makes the applicant suitable for the job opening. And the education section will provide the prospective employer with details of all educational qualifications.

The above information will not be effective if the resume is not written clearly and concisely. Most prospective employers will not have the time required to decipher any unclear writing. Such resumes will simply reach the rejected pile even if the applicant has impressive track record. Most resumes for the government positions have to be one page in length. However, if applicants feel one page is not sufficient to include all details of their qualifications they can continue to another page. However, two pages is the maximum limit to this type of resume.

The Key to a Successful Resume
When writing the resume, applicants will be answering the following questions.
• What are the attributes that make the applicant eligible for the opening?
• Why is the applicant better than the rest?
• What will the applicant offer the organization?

These questions are the standard questions which every other applicant will be answering. However, in order to make the resume stand out, applicants need to write in a manner that appeals to the prospective employer. This is the key to a successful resume of any type be it a government resume or any other. By referring to few well written sample resumes, applicants can sharpen their resume writing skills and forward a well written resume to impress the selectors.
