A PROJECT to help young people access the health advice they need has proved so popular its website attracted 2,000 new users in its first few months of going live.
The ‘Your Health’ campaign was launched in September to provide young people across Sunderland with information on issues, such as drugs, alcohol, sexual health, adopting healthier lifestyles and bullying, the information being provided in a format the young people could readily understand.
In response to their concerns, Sunderland City Council and its partners made the advice instantly accessible via a free mobile Smartphone ‘app’ and website yourhealthsunderland.com as well as distributing the information through secondary schools and health information areas.
Glenn Riddle, Health Programmes Manager for Sunderland’s Children’s Services, said: “The website is a great starting point for anyone looking for information about young people’s health and local services that are available.
“As young people are never without their mobile phone, the Smartphone app will ensure young people have access to key health information 24 hours a day.
“We’ve had some fantastic feedback via the web forms. One 17-year-old from Sunderland thanked us and said he felt the information would affect his life significantly.
As well as the website and app, the council produced two booklets entitled ‘The Big Health Book – Information on all the things you told us you wanted to know about’ for 11 to 15 and 16 to 24 year olds. The booklet ‘Essential Guide to Young People’s Health’ was also produced for parents and carers of young people going to secondary schools.
“The range of books answers the common things young people are curious about and helps parents with the tricky questions they are asked as young people enter their teenage years,” said Mr Riddle.
“Hopefully we will start to see more young people take responsibility for their own health and know where to go for information and services in Sunderland. This then contributes to improving key health outcomes around sexual health, substance misuse and obesity.”
