Bargain hunting isn't a bad thing. Smart spending and saving money are goals that we should all aspire for, especially since the financial crunch seems to be showing little signs of letting up. But there are people who take bargain shopping to the extreme, so much so that it starts to be impractical.
Telltale Signs
A bargain shopping addict will usually purchase items simply because they are on sale. He or she may feel that it is unwise to pass up a good deal even if the item isn't a necessity. Saving money is a good thing and this is what they use to rationalize their behavior. If you can get 10 cans of beans for at a rock bottom price, why would you want to pass it up? The problem starts to present itself when no one on the family even eats beans.
Bargain addicts often hide their purchases because they feel ashamed of their behavior. If they can’t hide the items that they bought, they usually lie about how much they have actually spent.
If you have numerous products that you have never used, this might be cause for worry. People for whom bargain shopping has become an addiction often forget that they have already purchased a certain item, will keep purchasing that product but never actually use it.
Bargain addicts also shop to compensate for certain inadequacies that they have or as a form of relief from undesirable emotions such as anger, sadness and fear.
What You Can Do
If you feel that your bargain hunting is spiraling out of control, there are ways of curbing such behavior. When you have to go to the supermarket, make a list of the items that you need and stick to that list. Before you pick up an item that isn't on your list, ask yourself if you truly need that product and if anything bad will happen if you do not buy it.
As much as possible, pay cash for the items that you buy. Credit cards are some of the easiest way to overspend and get into debt. If you must have a credit card, maintain only one card which should be used for emergencies only. Avoid going to the store when you are depressed. If you want to feel better, devote your time to other equally pleasing activities. Cultivate a hobby, exercise, learn a new skill. When you are trying to steer clear of destructive behavior, it often helps to substitute the activity with something that will boost confidence. Better yet, get some of your friends to do these activities with you for added motivation.
Healthy Bargain Hunting
Healthy bargain hunting should always be about providing for your needs while saving money in the process. The goal is for you to learn money savvy tricks so that you can devote more of your time and resources to meaningful things such as vacationing with your family, having enough resources to supplement your child’s education and so on.
You never purchase for the sake of getting a bargain. That bargain must have practical use for you and your family.
