The world as it is today, believes that the art of Yoga is meant only for those adults who can pronounce the names of the poses and postures correctly. There is an unspoken apprehension about Yoga being harmful for children who are within the age of 5 to 11. The reason for such apprehensions are understandable. The poses and the postures of yoga asanas usually appear very difficult. It seems to many like they would eventually result in breaking bones in many ways than just one, and that, once attempted, people may not be able to stand erect again. For those who have an idea of the effects that yoga asanas can have on one’s health, will have another side of the story to tell, but, those who are new to it do continue to be apprehensive. Under circumstances where the parent themselves are not sure about the art, the children in turn, will certainly be deprived of its benefits.
To dispel common apprehensions as has been mentioned, one can say that it is necessary for the people at large to understand Yoga in the light of its history. Centuries ago, children, barely the age of 5, were inducted into the Art of Yoga and their entire lives were dedicated for this cause. All that these little yogis learnt in their initial days were the asanas that helped them in many ways to ensure perfect health condition that lasted them for a long lifetime. Starting yoga at an early age is an ‘all good and no bad situation’. Yoga and flexibility goes hand in hand, and it is known that flexibility is best in children than in adults. Starting yoga at a young age will not only take advantage of this flexibility, but will also help in retaining the same for a long time to come. This in fact helps in preventing injuries than causing the same. An unbelievable development of immunity in children has been witnessed with regular practice of yoga.
Yoga for children, (which is as simple as yoga for beginners of any age), however has been introduced in many schools across the world. A number of asanas that are not too physically taxing are taught to children as a part of their physical training. The approach to training the children in yoga differs in different schools. But basically, the teachers follow a more child friendly approach, like using terms for the poses and postures that they can relate to and make learning fun. Children are always into physical activities. The weirder the poses, the happier they are trying to attempt them. None of them may have a clear idea of what Yoga is, or, what it does, or, where it came from. All that the little yogis do is follow their trainers to do the best that their little bodies can afford to. Introducing yoga to children can be one of the best decision that a parent can take for the future of a child. It is desirable to include good things early in life than wait for years to pass before shaking hands with the benefits.
