Wrought iron is commercial iron that has little use today and has been replaced by mild steel. The use of wrought iron is not a new concept. Wrought iron has been used for centuries because of its durable and decorative nature. From protecting windows and doors to decorating famous castles and conventional homes, wrought iron has truly served a huge number of purposes. The earliest use of wrought iron dates back to the thirteenth century when it was used for outdoor fences. Today, wrought iron is still a common decorating material for homes of all shapes, sizes and styles. Wrought iron is popular for outdoor use for traditional items including fences, gates, and stairway rails as well as for smaller facts including gate latches and hinges.
It is popular for indoor use as well, for items including wall decor, candle holders, lamps, fireplace accessories, and a variety of furniture pieces. Wrought iron will always have a place in the world of home decorating, regardless of the mechanism of its true meaning. Wrought iron is a very strong form of iron that has been hammered out, which is very different from cast iron which is molten iron that is poured into a mold and allowed to cool. Wrought iron is a much stronger type of iron, which is why it is used for many different types of applications in the world today. Some of the main uses for wrought iron are for furniture and many different types of decorations.
Wrought iron is extensively used for different types of furniture. Many beds, benches, and other types of furniture are made out of wrought iron. Bar stools are usually made out of wrought iron as well. Wrought iron allows the legs of the stool to be made with a very strong type of metal, but it also allows the legs to have elaborate designs worked into them. Wrought iron furniture gives a room a very pastoral look, but it also provides a strong type of furniture that will last for a very long time. The most popular type of wrought iron furniture is usually a black or dark gray combined with dark wood.
The carbon in steel is the cause for its corrosion. But wrought iron has less carbon content in it and therefore this make it best suit for using it. The slag content present in wrought iron resists corrosion. The structure of the iron gives rise to a very rough surface texture, which interlocks with the oxide layer, be it rust or mill scale, preventing it from peeling off the surface. The oxides therefore act as a protective coating preventing further corrosion. Electrically speaking, where the slag appears on the surface it acts an insulator between the areas of reactive iron, retarding electrolytic action.
