Lutz Bethge, CEO of Montblanc International, tells me, “I still remember my first record ‘All You Need Is Love.’” John Lennon created the music of a generation, and even today, Bethge hears his children listening to the artist’s iconic music. It was in this spirit that Montblanc celebrated its latest limited edition pens last Sunday. Released in three versions, each John Lennon Edition Writing Instrument embodies the music and art that was so much a part of Lennon’s work, but none so well as the collection’s most prestigious piece.

With only 70 copies manufactured, Edition 70 is a nod to Lennon’s 70th birthday. In this adaptation, a skeletal frame artfully renders the word “Imagine” in white gold, beautifully encasing the pen’s internal blue barrel. The barrel’s transparent, tented resin is meant as a reference to Lennon’s well-known blue glasses, and the pen maintains this motif. As a finishing accent, a delicate sapphire is set on guitar-inspired clip along with three diamonds that demarcate the chords for the famous song. Further personalizing the pen to reflect Lennon’s essence, each of these instruments bears the peace symbol on an 18 carat gold nib as well as a small silver plaque engraved with the artist’s self-portrait. The Edition 70 pen, not available at every location, is priced at $27,000.

The two other versions of the John Lennon pen equally embrace his inspiring image. Like the Edition 70, these instruments feature the same self portrait and emblem of peace, but they express the range of Lennon’s influence across the world. The 2010 Special Edition playfully incorporates the familiar grooves of a vinyl record onto black, precious resin. The Commemorative Edition 1940 pen honors the release date, “02.10.1971,” for Lennon’s international hit, Imagine. It’s barrel features a meticulous pattern of rhodium plating meant to mimic the famous Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park. As a final touch a blue tanzanite crystal decorates it’s guitar shaped clip.

Sharing the writer’s vision, Montblanc will donate a portion of the collection’s proceeds to support the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. The bus, which travels all over the United States, brings students the resources to record their music and gain experience with each stage of production. For most, the bus is a dream on wheels, supplementing limited art programs and those which have been cut altogether. Bethge has long believed that “education is the only way to break the poverty cycle,” and in honoring John Lennon, he and the Montblanc corporation hope to honor Lennon’s convictions and also continuing their own history of social responsibility.
