In addition to being one of the world’s favorite destinations for leisure travel, Thailand now attracts visitors in droves with its high-quality and affordable hospitals and clinics. This new brand of travel, known as medical tourism, is extremely popular in the Land of Smiles where overseas guests come for cosmetic surgery, health & wellness treatments, dentistry, and everything else the Thai healthcare system provides, and they’re extending their visits in order to recuperate in one of the country’s many excellent holiday hotspots such as Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Phuket, or Hua Hin.
As the medical tourism industry grows, more information is available for patients who have become increasingly aware of the numerous international accreditations that Thai medical facilities have earned, and while modern Thailand has always prided itself on its state-of-the-art hospitals, over the last decade many have passed rigorous certification processes. In fact, in 2002, the Kingdom was the first Asian country to receive prestigious Joint Commission International accreditation (JCI).
JCI is the recognized leader in assessing healthcare facilities’ medical standards and patient-care quality, with a worldwide presence covering more than 80 countries. They provide various healthcare organizations, medical agencies, and health ministries with certification, education, and advisory services, and as of April, 2013, there were 28 hospitals in Thailand with the JCI stamp of approval, including 9 located outside of Bangkok. Famous Bumrungrad International heads the list of facilities in the capital that includes Bangkok Heart Hospital, BNH Hospital, and Yanhee Hospital; and, outside of the city, notable recipients of the accreditation can be found in Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai Ram Hospital), Phitsanulok (Pitsanuvej Hospital), and Chonburi (Samitivej Sriracha Hospital), plus Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket, Trat, and Koh Samui where branches of Bangkok Hospital reside.
In 2010, JCI added another layer to their program called Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), recognizing facilities who need not be JCI accredited for their excellence in the integration and coordination of care when treating specific areas of disease. This includes the treatment of 15 serious ailments ranging from heart failure to diabetes to kidney disease, and 5 hospitals in Thailand have received not only JCI accreditation, but a combined 19 CCPC certifications as well. Bangkok Hospital received the certification in six areas including their Breast Cancer and Low Back Pain Programs; four disciplines at Bumrungrad earned CCPC, such as care for chronic kidney disease and primary stroke; and Samitivej Srinakarin, Samitivej Sukhumvit, and Vejthani hospitals were recognized for three programs each.
In addition, scores of Thai hospitals attain Hospital Accreditation (HA), a Thailand-specific program governed by the Ministry of Public Health’s Institute of Hospital Quality Improvement & Accreditation. At present, over 350 hospitals in Thailand have garnered HA certification, a figure that is growing rapidly as more and more facilities aim to improve standards and attract overseas visitors.
More and more patients are taking note of the excellent and affordable care delivered by Thai hospitals. Their first-hand experiences, combined with the plethora of international and domestic accreditations and certifications, leads to an opinion that is driving the success of the medical tourism industry in Thailand. Namely, that the quality of medicine is high, by any standard.
