There are always safety issues inside the workplace. Accidents and injuries can be avoided when proper workplace safety policies and procedures are in place.
Safety issues don’t only cause injuries and accidents but they also cause financial expenses on the part of the company. So as much as possible, they should be avoided. The workplace should be kept as safe as possible for all the workers.
The Jargons
To properly understand workplace safety, here are some words that are commonly used during workplace safety orientations. It would be helpful, especially for workers, to understand exactly what these words mean:
• Workplace Safety – This refers to the effort of everyone in controlling and eliminating all hazards that can lead to accidents and injuries inside the workplace. It means keeping everyone inside the workplace safe, not only the workers but also those who are merely visiting the workplace.
• Workplace Policies – These are the set of rules that the company has put in place for everyone to follow. The workplace policies help ensure the safety of everyone when inside the workplace. It also includes the potential hazards and how to avoid the workplace hazards.
• Safety Procedure – What has to be done to ensure the safety of the people in the workplace? Safety procedure refers to both the procedure to be done to avoid safety issues and procedures to be done in case of accident, injury or other emergency situations.
• Hazards – This refers to things, people, or events that may cause safety issue. For instance, boxes on the stairway are considered hazardous. Employees should be able to know how to identify and avoid hazards. Furthermore, they should know what to do in case a potential hazard is identified.
• Work Safety Training – A training that is geared towards informing workers about the hazards in the workplace, how to avoid hazards, what procedures to do when hazards are identified, what to do in case of accident, injury, or emergency situations and other safety related concerns. First aid training and fire safety training are parts of work safety training.
• Unsafe Acts – This refers to the actions or behaviour of workers that may lead to harm or hazard.
Knowledge of these work safety terms will help workers to better understand work safety especially during the pre-work safety orientation. You can get lost into the myriad of words. It’s good that you know what people are talking about.
